did overclocking do this to my PC?

i leave my pc on 24/7 running SETI, i have my atlon xp 2500 o/c to 3200 on a .10 voltage bump over norm. i was downloading 3 things thru mozilla and then i had my bit torrent client running and downloading some stuff. (all of this was legit, no warez, the bittorent was one from mandrake linux's site, so was the other 3 downloads). anyway i get up this morning and my network connection is hosed on my pc, other pcs in the house working fine, they run zonealarm when idle. i set my system back to default clocks and voltages, ran a complete virus scan with avg with the latest definitions from yesterday. i scanned for spyware yesterday, nothing suspecious in my startup list or my system proccess list. every 4 secounds, my CPU usage will spike from svchost. i get 66% cpu usage and it lags my system bad, i cant get on the network and those are my problems. the cpu spike happens so fast that i cannot see what is using it in my process list and it even screws up my mouse cursur. Did i get a virus from bittorrent (i have latest AVG) or did i hose my system from o/c? my temps never ever got above 53C even under heavy load.

I had that too, but I can't remember how I fixed it, sorry 🙁
Maybe it was adware or mabe some windows tweaks fixed it...

not possible for it being spyware, i get very little with all the cocktails i use, see my sig. but im thinking that its either a virus or cpu. i ran this thing for 5 months overclocked without it doing anything wrong,

If your system was "hosed" it would not even post IMO. Just backup then format/reinstall windows. Should only take 30 mins on your setup (installing XP).

I had bit torrent (Azureus 1.6?)do some weird things to my PC awhile back. It would cause IE to crash and also I could not CTRL ATL DELETE it would just sit there after I closed BT. After a reboot it would be fine. I don't use it at all now though.

Maybe your network stack drivers are hosed? Have you tried re-installing your NIC drivers? Do you have any mapped network drives that XP can't locate? Those are my two ideas on what to look for.

Good luck

Jesus Christ man. With all the stuff you got running on yo pc, it sounds like it's a Department of Energy Supercomputer!!

You only have a mild oc, so I doubt it is oc realted. The fact that you only have problem when the nic is connected the switch also suggests that it is not due to you oc. Maybe it is alien-related.

Are you running the newest ZoneAlarm 5 product? I was reading up on their messageboards briefly, also the boards at dslreports.com, and it seems that ZA5 has quite a few issues with "conflicts" with other software, including some recent Norton products.

The other possibility is, I've read other reports that BitTorrent, for whatever reason, and it may depend on the client, causes NIC hardware or drivers to flake out. I don't know why, nor have concrete knowledge of any specific failure mode, but just though it might be useful to mention.

I *have*, at times, seen cases in which NICs or switch ports have gotten damages, flaky, sometimes from power surges, sometimes from static discharge, and sometimes... just because.

my CPU usage will spike from svchost. i get 66% cpu usage and it lags my system bad, i cant get on the network and those are my problems.

That part does sound like some sort of network worm that managed to get into your system. I've heard such reports before, and they turned out to be malware. Especially if it slows your system down enough to cause noticable lag to the user. Nothing in the "normal" SVCHOST set of processes should cause that.

interesting, it only occurs when i have my NIC plugged into the switch
SPYWARE !!!!!! Adware, spybot, and others use them all or reformat......

it turns out it was the NIC on my mobo causing the problems, switched over to another NIC and problems are gone, too bad i discovered this after i formatted and the problem returned, swaped the nic, problem gone.

WTF now my other nic is dropping me ever 10 minutes and losing all network connections, all other PC are working fine here

Does it say "lsass.exe" is shuting down in x seconds ? That is sassar virus, and killing my company today. Require xxxx835732xxx something windows fix. With no network cable, nothing, with it in, it will reboot every 1-10 minutes.

no, it just does not connect to the interweb, runs fine but connection dies, i ran some of the fixes that are in my sig to see if i can get it to work
