I think there was another story behind it, but I think there's another story behind everything :sneaky:

The incident?
The cleanup and help people?
The site?
The war?

What are you talking about?

The failure to take out OBL at Tora Bora and the huge delay in pursuing those responsible for 9/11 in Iraq were their only major missteps. There were a lot of things done right though: 9/11 memorial towers, formation of Department of Homeland Security, formation of the TSA, Patriot Act.

In general NO,

1. FAA rules were not strict (i.e. cockpit door).
2. TSA rules were not strict (images of guys with box cutters).
3. Slow response from gov with planes.
4. Communication breakdowns.....
5. Inability for radio systems from fire, police, etc. to communicate.
6. To sum it all up 9/11 exposed a closet full of shit, containing "Fred Flintstone antiquated bitch-matched" technologies and exorbitant comm breakdowns within the various fed/state agencies.

That's to name a few. We were caught with our pants down pretty much....

Maybe OBL was helping Saddam at the time with those Tikrit WMDs that Rumsfeld said they had and we knew all about, like OBL being at Tora Bora.

After all the two were secret lovers who's ultimate goal was stealing the Presidential Secret Decoder Ring.

Well, it sure took advantage of 9/11 to take a greater control over its own citizens by neverending and unconstitutional Patriot Act, warrantless searches and surveillance, TSA abuse, whistleblower witch-hunt, etc.

It's a difficult question, but no one can deny that the eventual results of our government's response are exactly what the terrorists wanted.

Initially, the strategy was sound. Then Bush/Rumsfeld/Wolfowitz royally screwed the pooch with Tora Borra and Iraq.

Dropped the ball and allowed it to happen despite warning signs, and then invaded a wrong country, wasting thousands of US lives, trillions of dollars, only to leave a playground for more terrorists to train in?
I'd say no.

Of course they didn't.

They weren't worried about the warnings they received, and after the attacks an epic campaign of white washing began by Cheney and Rove in order to shield them from as much responsibility as possible. 9/11 sympathy and pain was then used to make political hay at home, it was the sugar on top of intel manipulation and outright lies presented to get us into Iraq - which went on to alienate allies and destroy good will we had at the time (along with that surplus).

One of the darkest times in our history I'd say, and their legacy of lies and suffering will continue to cost us blood and money for years to come. Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld and Rove (along with other notable assholes like Perle, Kristol and Wolfowitz) are to blame, and if I had my druthers they'd all have long since been keel hauled on a Nimitz class carrier.

Government doesn't handle anything well when there's a puppet at the wheel who can barely read and relegates decisions to back seat drivers.

We gave up some freedoms, sure. And paid like a trillion dollars in fun money we can just print more of. And I guess some people died. But I no longer live in fear of being killed by a terrorist. :) Well, except for this new group anyway. Give the military more money I say, pull it from the entitlement programs entitled liberals mooch off of if you have to. I need to feel safe again. :'(

Sure, I'll play.

As far as the immediate after-effects of this horrible tragedy, yes, I was happy with the way the government, really our President, handled it. I was in college at the time, only reading some articles here in there; but I was, as was much of the country, quite proud to be an American after seeing how the situation was being handled.

Going beyond that is a can of worms that will probably be debated forever.

I will respond to the "warning signs" comment. I think that's a bunch of bull. What bad situation could you not look back at and say "If I had only done this, or paid more attention to that." Our government receives warning signs like this almost daily. I don't see this as being any different.

Nope. The US spent way too much time playing the victim and instead of performing a show of force, we wallowed for weeks and now years trying to "rebuild" the Middle East in our image. And guess what...we've failed completely.

News flash: they don't want us there. The leaders don't, the religious people don't, the citizens don't.

Here's what we should have done. We should have turned the entirety of Afghanistan and Iraq (if that's, indeed, where those responsible were) into a giant glass parkinglot, gone over and stole every ounce of oil we could, and told the world "This is what happens when you attack us."

Then we should have taken the trillion+ dollars we've spent on the bullshit "nation building" and used it to rebuild the two WTC towers twice as tall as they used to be. Just to make a statement.

Instead, we let them change our way of life. We let the terrorists win.
