Is this still a thing? Did it a catch on in any meaningful way?

They have just released a OnePlus Two... if that answers your question.

Meaningful? No they are still small scale doing invites, etc.
The OnePlus Two doesn't have as much hype as the first one (mostly because of no NFC) and better competition from Motorola/google this year. The Moto X Pure and nexus phones is priced similarly to the OPT and easier to buy. Last year the OPO didn't really have any competition at its price point.

Oneplus One also had CM while the Two is running Oxygen OS which has a lot of growing to do. OnePlus is now responsible for the hardware and software for their phone and it has not gone very well. There is supposed to be a OnePlus Mini/X being announced on October 29. Smaller lower spec'd phone at a lower price point. This should further piss off OnePlus customers as they have provided little to no support for the original One as they have their hands full dealing with the Two.

The One was a great phone for the price. The Two is kind of a side grade at best and at its price point, there are better options.

Swappa is loaded with OnePlus Two phones for sale at prices lower than direct from OnePlus so the demand has fallen off quickly as potential customers have grown tired of OnePlus and their antics.

I had the OnePlus One last year for about 7 months and the OnePlus Two for two days in September. I moved on.

I had the OnePlus One 64GB for quite a while.... Sold it as my new job provided me with an iphone for free.

Loved the OnePlus One though - Wish I still had it at times.

I'll hit you up when I get my A9, no need to have 2 spare smartphones at home.

I still can't believe they went with a fingerprint reader and no NFC.

Pretty much proves they went for the feature checklist vs. actually being useful.

Fingerprint scanner + NFC = Mobile Payments

It's possible they knew that given the unlocked bootloader and ease of rooting most of their users wouldn't be able to use it anyway... Can't wait for them to lift that restriction (and they will).
