Did my WRT54G die?

Ok, I can't figure this one out.

Linksys WRT54G -- The Linksys firmware, have not flashed it with any 3rd party fw. It worked a month ago, I hooked it up yesterday, and it's not working.

My computer can see the wireless network, and says connected, but will not go online. The internet connection is fine. NO security is enabled (WEP, WPA-PSK, MAC Filtering, etc.)

I then did a reset to the router. The reset was successful, as the router name went back to "WRT54G", the Wireless network name went back to "linksys". Once again, my computer can see the network, but can't go online.

My brother-in-law was having the exact same problem connecting with his laptop. (His is a Centrino, mine is using a Netgear WG511)

Both laptops were set to obtain an IP with DHCP.

What am I missing? After the router reset, it really should have been able to connect and get online. I have a wired router that we are using that does allow me to get online without any problems, so my cable internet connection is fine.

Also, I did a Linksys Firmware update last night, and it was successful.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thnx.

Can you get online via the wired ports?

Log on to the router and go to the last tab on the right, the status tab. You should have something like this:

Login Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP
IP Address: 201.10.201.79
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 201.10.201.1
DNS 1: 201.10.201.27
DNS 2: 201.10.201.28

If you have no WAN IP address and the login type is Automatic Configuration, it is probably dead. The only thing you could try is plug in the other router and get its MAC address, and then put that in the linksys.
Go to setup, and the subheading MAC address clone. Enable and type in that other MAC address.

Thanks for your suggestions. I didn't even look at the Status of the router to make sure that it was able to communicate with the cable modem and getting an IP.

Well....it wasn't. It was all 0's the entire way down, no DNS or IP. I reset the router, power cycled it a few times...then all of a sudden, it was working.

Damn crazy thing.

Thanks again! But I will take this as a sign that this router may be dying on me.

Maybe not. The ISP's DHCP server hands out addresses based on the MAC of the connected device. You changed that when you put the WRT54G on there. It may have had some gas or something, and needed to get kicked a few times:)

Does your ISP issue a static IP or do they use a DHCP server? Try replicating hte MAC address on the router with a system that does get to the internet.

when i switch out to a wrt54g from a regular wired router, i power cycled the router and modem and got a new ip from the isp. it did take a bit of time, ~5mins.
