Did my sound card die?

I am re-installing vista with a new build but using my old sound device, an Xfi Xtremegamer. When I install either creative or youp-pax drivers, each tells me that there is no detected compatible device. Vista installs a generic HD audio device and uses HDMI as the output for some reason.

I even reseated the card and then switched slots and I get the same result. Did my card kick the bucket while sitting on my desk for a week or two? Thanks for any help.

Have you checked the device manager to see if there are any unknown devices or generic audio device or anything along those lines?

Yes, as I mentioned there is a generic hd audio device in device manager.

Bump, I am still absolutely gobsmacked by this problem. If it's dead, why would windows give me a generic HD audio device?
