Did my Power Supply just Die?

ok so the last few days ive been having a few random lock ups and reboots. last time this was happening i narrowed it down to dust build up causing the cpu to overheat. The Bios didnt show out of the ordinary temperatures, but i did the same as last night where i vacuumed all the dust out of the case, and then checked the temp, and it was fine. But the Computer was still locking up. A few minutes later, the computer turned itself off for the first time [usually reboots] and i smelt burning, so i quickly unplugged everything and opened the case and the power supply box was hot and smelled. Pressing the power button does nothing, the computer isnt turning on.

is tihs enough to verify the power supply is shot? i built this computer at least 16 months ago, and nothing has been replaced or died. the power supply is i think an "antec smart fan" that came with my SX840 case [by antec], not sure of the wattage, will this be expensive to replace?

thanks for any help

Your antec should still be under warranty of 3 years. If you dont get any power to your system and your PS smells burned then RMA it. I never did an RMA on an antec PS so you will have to check out their website for that information. Check the power light on the mobo to see if it is getting power.

ok, i checked that out, and i notice now that once the power supply is turned on and i press the front button first, the fans slightly "jolt" for a split second [spin a little], and the light on the motherboard comes on and stays on. subsequently pressing the power button again does nothing [not more jolts, it has to be turned off and on again at the back]. could this be a CMOS problem then, if it's getting power? i don't see why all the fans are capable of spinning, but not for very long

ideas?

Sounds like the PSU is surely done for. Smelling burnt electronics is never a good thing. When switching the I/O on the back it resets it, thinking that it can supply full power, so when the power button on the case is pressed it attempts it but fails and won't try again until you reset. But it's going to fail every time so RMA it if it's still under warranty (Luthien mentioned that it should be).

"i smell burning"...isn't that something that chief wiggum's kid would say on the simpsons?

sorry dude, your psu sounds dead. the same thing happened to me, except mine was a cheapo generic one.

ok checked the antec website, btw i'm in the united kingdom. It says no registration was neccesary, just proof of purchase, in order to get the warranty. dam though,i think i have to call um up and arrange something, i've never done this before, i bet it's a right pain. for proof of purchase i'll have to print an online order receipt from 2002 😛
