Did my 9800 Pro just take a dump?

I have a Gigabyte Radeon 9800 Pro that appears to have just crapped out on me.

screen cap

I haven't had a vid card crap out before, so I'm assuming this can be what happens with the vertical yellowish bars running down the screen. Is this familiar to anyone? And are there any self-fixing remedies or do I need to RMA it?

I haven't done anything to it beyond a normal install and it's about 9 months old. The mobo is an Intel 875PBZ and I know it's not the monitor because I have dual monitors and the vertical lines show up on both.

BTW, I'm in Mexico and an RMA is not an appealing option.

Thanks for any advice.

I was going to say that the VGA cable is bad, but if you can screencapture it, then it can't be.

I'm afraid it looks like time for an RMA.

welllllll....you might need to RMA it, my friend..since this is a screen capture (and not a digi-cam pic of your screen), that automatically removes the monitor from being the problem.

try uninstalling the current drivers and reinstalling them to see if that helps. what version of the Catalyst drivers are you using currently?

cheers,

dave

The current driver version I'm using is 6.14.10.6378. I already know there are newer versions of the Catalyst drivers, but I usually don't install new drivers unless I need them for specific new benefits or if I'm having trouble with new software running on the old drivers. I'll uninstall the current drivers and see if the new drivers help; somehow I doubt it though. I think I'll pull the card and have a visual inspection too.

Blah, RMA means I'll have to send it most likely to the US for replacement, which means high shipping costs and messing around with customs brokers, who, no matter what, like to take a nice chunk of fees even if there is no declared value, at least in Mexico.

well, looking at that shot, either your card is really overheating, or it bit the dust, gotta send her back

EDIT: check to see the graphics fan is still spinning

I am wondering if it was overheating. It's not overclocked, nothing has been changed from the original standard install and the fan seems to be working fine. I pulled the card out, cleaned it real well with a can of compressed air and re-installed. So far, it's working fine again but I'm going to run some UT2k4 and see if it stays okay, or if it acts up again. I sure don't want to hassle with an RMA.

If it happens again you might want to use an overclock utility to underclock it a bit, then see if it stabilizes. If it does then it's heat.
