Did LA Amateur Hour bork my PC?

Had a power outage earlier tonight, with the usual, lights/electrical appliances turning off, then a few moments later there was a flickering of the lights as if power was being restored, and then total power off, accompanied by a small boom, almost a popping noise coming out of my computer, but I heard it in a few other apts as well (or thought I did).

The power has come back on, but I noticed that the lights I had on (I turned them off after the power had gone) will not actually turn back on.

Neither will my computer. It was plugged into a surge protector, and shortly after I heard that boom/popping noise, I turned off my PSU. Tried turning it back on and booting my computer, but the comp won't respond to the buttons.

Did the power outage fry the computer despite the surge protector?

What's weird is the MacBook charger was also plugged in the entire time (but not into a surger protector) and it's working fine.

Any ideas?

So sorry all this happened to you! Sounds very much like similar events here in NYC.

Tell me exactly what is receiving power and so functioning normally in yr apartment at this point?

Is yr fridge working? Other appliances? Lights anywhere? TV? Radio?

If so, try to plug the computer into whichever outlet a working appliance is connected to (other than the fridge, if it is working, of course).

(Figure the odds of my asking someone this twice in two days here): you must have a J-box with circuit breakers somewhere. Look at the rear walls in yr cabinets, etc. Maybe a breaker got tripped and could not reset itself. If in a much older place, a fuse box. Maybe a fuse got blown.

Thanks for the well wishes, yes the fridge is working. I don't have a TV or radio.

The fuses and circuit breakers are in a maintenance room I dont have access to, but I'll ping the landlord and see whats up. Good thinking!

Before U ping....I get it's 3 hours earlier where you are.....if something, a lamp, under-cabinet light in yr kitchen, etc., is working.....try plugging the computer into that wall socket.

But, by all means, Ping away.:D

Yup, you were right. It was hidden behind where a door usually blocks it.

And yes, that seems to have solved the problem. Thanks Virgorising, long may your constellation be bright and unclouded!

EXCELLENT!

And, it was my special privilege to have been able to help a fiercely independent, smart---AND, elegant in her sensibility (I looked at one or two of your posts, forget the above keen reference, forget just the whimsy in the title of this thread)....fellow female! Only discovered you were a fellow female when I looked at yr profile.

Have a happily stress free rest of the nite!:)
