Did I screw up with this HD

It was like buck fever, I saw, I jumped, I did, and then... I thought (after I got home). Kinda in the wrong order, like some guys around a hot babe. I saw a great deal on a Hard drive and got so excited latching on to it I didn't even look at ALL the numbers.

I have an abit Is7 mobo and it supports ATA 100//66/33 and this hot deal I jumped on is an ATA 133. So, did I really screw up or is a hard drive backward compatable. Or would I have to set it up serial? If I can use it will it work as a master to a ATA 100 in parallel or series or does the slave have to match? Or do I just take the thing back and get the right drive.

It might be the wrong part for my machine, but a HELLUVA deal never the less!!

Thanks for your help!

relax, they're backward compatible. it wouldn't work the other way, you couldn't get a 100 to work at 133.;)

Thanks Lucky 9,

Do you have any answers for the rest of my qestions? Plus one...will this cause any problems like slowing down? I know that it would produce at 100 and not 133 but anything else?

i don't know anything about serial but i'd be suprised if it would be any different than parallel. as for speed. i am told that each channel will run at the slowest disks speed on that channel. i have never understood that because if you have a cd rom on the same channel things don't work that way. i have three disks in my machine right now. all 7200s, all at ide 100. and yes, you can run both on the same channel at the 100 level. i can't see any other probs. should work at 100 and be perfectly normal at that speed...enjoy;)

I think that used to be the way of things, but not anymore, at least it won't have as much of an impact. There is some issue with IDE only being able to handle one command at a time - both devices can't signal at the same time. I don't know that this impacts performance noticably.

Thanks Jeff7 and Lucky9, I guess I'll give it a shot and sometime soon try to hook up the Maxtor ATA133 in series to the WD ATA100 and see what happens. It may or may not help but from what you two have told me, it won't hurt either. Anyway, "I have my hard drives hooked up in series", sounds like I really know what I'm doing, just wish I did!! Thank you!
