so i bought a set of crucial ballistix pc2-8000 (ddr2-1000) 2x1gb for 309

i saw a 2gb set of corsair ddr2-800 for 170- almost half of what i payed for mine for the same amount of memory.

how come the corsair is so much cheaper? is it because crucial uses micron chips? did i pay for quality or the extra 200mhz (that i am using...)?

Crucial is usually more expensive and they do use Micron ICs. You get what you pay for though and Crucial is quality. As long as you're running it at DDR2-1000 don't worry about it since you've already got it. I bought the Crucial DDR2-800 set and don't regret it.

i agree with the others, the ram you bought is quality. they're well known for awesome overclocks, too.

about the price, i think that seems about right for DDR2-1000. when you get to the really fast stuff, price increases exponentially

I'd say that the extra money can be worth it in the long run. I have two pairs of Crucial Ballistix humming away happily on a mild overclock. Been over a year and they've been error and problem free. Tight timings at a high overclock is nice.

They're a bit more futureproof if you upgrade your CPU in the future. An "Overclock" today is more of a chance to run 1:1 tomorrow when new CPUs are released running on a faster FSB.

I bought the same sticks for about the same price though. The price differential wasn't nearly as great then as it is now, so at the time I don't think it was a mistake. Now though, I'd probably just get some DDR2-800 for almost half the price and take my chances on the Micron D9 lottery on lower spec'd non-Crucial kits.

I just had a stick of Crucial RAM go bad, PC133 256MB, bought in 2001. I called them up and they immediately sent me a replacement. Crucial rocks.
