Did I pay too much for these repairs to my van?

Two weeks ago I did the following repairs to my '92 GMC Safari van:

  • Four (4) new 215/70/15 tires, mounted and balanced
  • New Walker muffler and tailpipe, installed
  • Flushed transmission fluid and installed new filter
  • New front rotors, brake pads, and Timken wheel bearings, installed (RWD)
  • Oil change and filter
  • New front and rear U-joints installed
  • New output seal on transmission

This was done for $319.72, including tax and labor

Did I get screwed?

Wow...Thats a super cheap price. Normally just the Tires mounted and balance cost about $200 and then the brake job will cost about $100 and you practically got all the other stuff for free! Lets lets share the love. Where did you get this done?

Four (4) new 215/70/15 tires, mounted and balanced = $200 Minimum

New Walker muffler and tailpipe, installed = $125 Minimum

Flushed transmission fluid and installed new filter = $75 Minimum

New front rotors, brake pads, and Timken wheel bearings, installed (RWD) = $300 Minimum

Oil change and filter = $20

New front and rear U-joints installed = $175

New output seal on transmission = $20

Total = $815 Plus tax

This was done for $319.72, including tax and labor

I don't believe it.

Edit;

It's nice to have a brother who has a shop..........

Now I do.

Edit again ;

Yes you did get screwed, he charged you for labor ?

I never charge family members for labor ever, in fact, I charge them only for parts and that's at the price I get them for.

Actually, I paid wholesale for the tires. The rotors and bearings I bought retail....his supplier didn't have the proper rotors in stock that day (the van has 4-wheel ABS and the rotors the supply house sent didn't have the sensors on them.)

I paid for the labor by buying dinner for John.

Almost forgot the new Interstate battery that was put in, too.

Reluctor rings, not sensors 😉

Good for you, it's nice having a mechanic in the family, isn't it 🙂

We both mechanic......I'm a shade-tree, he's like you, ASE certified in all sorts of things. Day job is managing one of the Craven Tire stores in N. VA, then, money-hungry as he is, moonlights at a Mercedes-Benz/Porsche/Audi dealer a few nights a week.

On a side note, says Audis are about pure junk as durability goes and isn't too impressed with Porsche's reliability, either.

Weird, tho.......says Porsche requires the sales persons to learn how to drive the Porsches and then it's the sales person's job to teach each customer how to drive the car when bought. Says you can smell a newbie Porsche driver a block away.....fried clutch.

I mechanic too 😉😛

Did you watch or assist him in any way while he was working on your vehicle ?

I watched.........while I am capable of doing almost all he had done, I stayed out of the way. (Ins. regs, although I did sign a temporary employment cert. for the shop to cover them if something happened to me.) The shop was very busy, so I played on the net and let he and his crew messed with it.
