Did I miss something? why did the Wii console triple in price?

Where is this actually happening?
I checked eBay completed listings and they're cheap, as they are on CL.
You can't trust Amazon, there are always insane sellers on there.

For new in sealed box?

Old PS2 games still shrinkwrapped can fetch $100+ while a used rental copy is $9.

New in box for something no longer made often fetches a premium, it's not surprising that the market price for a "pristine" boxed Wii is so high.

I've bought so many to mod for friends, never paid more than $50-60. You would have sworn most of these were new, it's crazy. So many bought them and never played them after the novelty wore off and they didn't want to invest any more money into them.
Not sure why people would want such a mass produced item "new in box" when there are so many out there that were played for a few hours. I could understand the WiiU Zelda editions or something, but these came in white, blue, black and red with no other embellishment. All had pretty much the same hardware (which actually got worse over time).
I have a Star Wars Xbox360 up in my closet but that's not even to collect it, I just already have them in the living room and media room . I just thought it looked cool and it makes the R2D2 noise.
Some things I'll never understand.
