Did I measure myself right?

Hi All,

I am ordering a custom tailored shirt and was wondering if I made any obvious mistakes when I measured myself. I didn't have a tape measure so these measurements are measured via construction measuring tape (hard).

Let me know if this seems right.

Neck 15.5 inches

here for information">Hips 40.0 inches
Shoulder 19.0 inches
Left Sleeve Length 23.0 inches
Right Sleeve Length 23.0 inches
Left Short Sleeve Length 5.0 inches (Optional)
Right Short Sleeve Length 5.0 inches (Optional)
Left Wrist 7.0 inches
Right Wrist 7.0 inches
Bicep 15.0 inches (Optional)
Shirt Length 26.5 inches
Armhole 21.0 inches (Optional)

Why not just go get measured at a tailor? Places like mens warehouse will often measure you for free.

I might have to do that. Simply by the act of self measurement, you mess up some measurements huh? I was careful but I can definitely believe that.

Yeah, sounds like you're a little out of your element here - go have a professional do it. What website are you ordering from?

Get a proper tape and someone who knows what they're doing (a tailor?). No clue how you measured anything with hard tape measure unless you winged it. I have enough trouble with proper vinyl tailoring tape.

I've read more than a few reports of people screwing up measurements on custom clothing.

Your numbers mean nothing because I don't know what your height is or what your build is. A 42" chest and 35" waist is either a 6'5" well built guy or a 5'5" obese but well built guy.

I'd definitly get it professionally done. Even construction related stuff, if getting something custom made it's best to leave the company measure, if they screw up, it's on them.

OP, where do you live? There are outfits out there like Suit Supply in SF/Chicago/NYC where you can walk in and one of their guys will do the measuring for you.

Modern Tailor is good for the price but depending on your budget, I've liked what I've seen from Black Lapel. I'm a little out of the loop as I have plenty of suits, so maybe some better companies have popped up...there certainly are a lot of them these days.

I think measuring yourself is a bit juvenile and reeks of insecurity, but I once heard you measure from the underside if you want reality, top side if you want better self-esteem.

I am 5'10 and I live on the northcoast of the US. I might just drop by a suit store one day and see if they can give me all my measurements. I'll check out all these sites to see what is cheap yet good for shirts in the future.

I love the fitted 1MX line they have at Express but I put on some stature since a few years ago so if the shirt fits me perfectly, I must tuck it in or have it hang below my back pockets.

I also heard of darted shirts not too long ago so I wanted to see if they can take some of that slack from the back of my shirt.

I haven't had an ensemble just fit me perfectly in my life so I want to try it out without breaking the bank one of these days.

Came in to say "No, you overestimated, it's five and a half inches," saw it was about a shirt, left.
