Did I make a mistake?

I bought the 1200 BFG at the egg for $250. That is really cheap and the box looks like a normal ATX psu size wise. JG even admitted on his forum that he killed one testing with 1200W at 50C so it may be derated. :Q

The 1200W enermax is also $250 after MIR at the egg. I really don't care for (enermax) after literally getting burned with bad Liberty 620's. I'm sure the Galaxy 1200's are a good product but it's hard to get the raspberry taste out of my mouth if you know what I mean! ;)

I don't NEED that much power (like 95% of the users buying 1kW+ supplies!) but the posted efficiency of a "tracking type" power supply is nice as it won't blow up or get really loud if I load it up hard which is definitely possible.

Jonny didn't say he killed one. He said a reviewer he sent it to said, he could not get 1200W out of it at 50C. It is rated at 40C. He said at 45C that it shut down when trying to pull 1200W. That doesn't mean it was damaged necessarily, but perhaps the protection circuitry shut it down. He also said, it will do 1000W at 50C.

I don't mind sharing this information because the PSU is rated at 40C. I knew this would fail in his incubator before I sent the unit, but I was still curious as to how long the unit would run. The unit will certainly handle lower loads at higher temps (operating temperature is 50C afterall) but until airflow in the small housing is improved, I don't believe it can put out 1200W at > 40C.

died ? shutdown. ;)

I have a decently loaded UltraX3 1600W (pulls over 1200W from wall! :Q) and has never skipped a beat. Andyson is the OEM on that supply as well as the new BFG so the BFG should be a solid unit. Problem with the X3 is it's too long for smaller cases. It's also not as efficient in the mid range (600-800W) and fairly noisy compared to a HX1000 at similar loads.

Johnny may have worded that badly. I am not sure. Even if it isn't capable of 1200W at 50C, I hope it wouldn't bite the dust.

What are you powering with the X3 to make it pull 1200W?
