Did I make a mistake?

I got the 7600gt about a month ago and now I find out that geforce cards won't do HDR and AA at the same time (see here).

Part of my reasoning was that with my weak power supply (fortron 350w) an x1800gto might be too much for it, but now I'm not so sure, and with this HDR/AA thing I'm even more conviced that going nvidia may have been a mistake.

Somebody please tell me why a 7600gt was a better buy so that I can feel better about myself ;)

To make you feel better? Sure, hmm, performance is roughly the same, it costs less, it uses less power, it's shorter, and it may or may not be quieter! Really though, there isn't many games out there with hdr in the first place, why worry about AA. I mean the 7600gt will have enough on its hands trying to run say Oblivion with hdr let alone AA. You aren't missing much in the mid range cards w/o hdr and AA.

and if I had sprung for an x1900gt I would have needed a new power supply for sure, right? (please say yes ;))

Yes :)
With 350W PSU, i'd probably want to get a new one. Then with the new PSU spring for the X1900XT :)

Depending on the PSU an X1900XT runs perfectly fine on 350W, sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear.

A friend of mine recently got an Antec case with a 350W PSU included, much to the surprise of both of us it had 32A combined on the 12V rails so we decided to throw caution to the wind and give it a try as my PSU has 29A combined. Works smooth as butter and he's now playing Oblivion in 1600x1200 with HDR, 4x antialiasing and 8x anisotropic filtering.

I play it with HDR, 6x antialiasing and 16x anisotropic filtering but my native resolution is 1440x900 so it copes much better.

mine has a combined total of 34A, maybe I'll sell my 7600GT and buy the X1900GT

Will cope just fine but be sure to check its spec properly and see if it has safety features like overvoltage or undercurrent protection. If it's made by a decent brand such as Akasa, Antec, Enermax, Seasonic etc. then you won't need to worry.

That also depends on what games your playing.

Natural Water in the Natural Environments mod. :) Not tried Advanced Water, could you possibly take a screenshot for me next time you play?

haha avi a 7600gt is fine for the short term because who knows what will happen with the DX10 cards, they could come out in a few months and obsolete all the DX9's.

Or it's possible it doesn't happen for a few years. I got a 7600gt because I figured it would be alright until Vista/DX10 becomes a little clearer.

The one thing I'm really not liking is the thought of DX10 having to emulate in order to run DX9 games... unless its a great emulator, that could just be bad. So I buy a cheap card, and wait and see.

I think what the OP was asking was did he make a mistake because he knows that it can't do HDR and AA.

I personally do not think you made a mistake. A 7600GT is a great mid-end card, and probably one of the fastest there is.

If you like it keep it. If you don't, then there's always the FS/FT section

Akshayt meant... even if a 7600 could do HDR + AA the performance would be too crappy to bother with.. so yah... no mistake

Yeah, I really doubt that X1800GTO would have offered stellar performance with HDR+AA in that GPU-killer Oblivion. I'm not saying this to just make you feel better...or am I?

Those screen shots are simply amazing. I am not a big RPG fan, but the more I see screenies of this game, the more I want to buy it. I am just afraid to plunk down $50 on a game I won't play for very long. I am pretty sure I could run it with some great detail settings with my rig, even though it's not quite as fast as yours.

Agreed even if either card were capable neither would be very smooth with AA and HDR at the same time.
