Did I lose out or was this some sort of scam

I was walking in a casino with my g/f and her mom, I was a little bit behind so it could have seemed like I was alone. A guy walked up to me with a hand full of black chips and said

him- "hey if you cash these in I;ll give you $100"
me- "what?"
him- "my fiance doesnt want me betting, so could you cash these in for me and i'll let you keep one"
(he is obviously alone and me thinking how little sense this makes shrug him off and say no)
he continued to try and convince me for about a minute then started looking for someone else

now i might actually normally do it if i was standing alone and if his story made sense.

but for the life of me i couldnt figure out what the scam would be, except for possibly fake chips

He wants you to pay the taxes on his winnings? That is the only scam I can think of quickly here but I don't know anything about casinos.

EDIT - I didn't even think of fake chips but that makes complete sense.

either stolen or he made a big win and wants to withdraw w/o getting the IRS involved to pay taxes ( > $10,000 cashout)

I've always wondered how hard it would be to pass fake chips at a casino. They don't seem all that complex in design, and when you cash them they certainly don't check each one individually..

i would guess fake chips too, but this wasnt far from the cashier, meaning if i got caught they obviously would have had everything (him giving me the chips on camera)

my other guess would be he wasnt supposed to be gambling there and was afraid the cashier might recognize him

He is trying to get around a CTR. Counterfeit chips does not make it into the casino cage these days. They have alot of security measures that we dont talk about.

old chip scam. if you would have agreed he would have asked for a "deposit." you give him your cash, go inside, come out after the cashier takes your chips and gives you nothing. you go back out, he's gone.

Wait, why does the cashier take the chips but give you no cash? This is assuming fake chips?

With the amount of time he is spending in the street trying to get money from a stranger... he could go to a casino and cash them three times.
