after adding a new ide cable to my box it wouldn't power on. at first i thought it was the power supply, but i was wrong. i must have knock the cmos jumper loose, becuz i found it lying inside the box. the system was plugged in i believe when it got knocked out. i put the jumper back on the 1 and 2 pins, but i'm still not getting any power. would this kill the motherboard? how can i know for sure?

put the jumper on 2-3 for 10 sec and put it back to 1-2 and try again.

now i don't know what the hell is going on. i finally got power, but it keeps dying on me. i can get power then immediately power it off and try to turn it back on and it's dead again. it seems everythime i pull something in it loses power again. usually if i wait a few minutes it will power up, but as soon as i turn it off and try to power it up again, it dies.

Make sure your not jumpering the cmos in a constant reset position.
Make sure your power cable is seated fully (the main to the motherboard).
If you added an IDE device, make sure you position any jumpers on those devices for proper operation, i.e.: Slave/Master,ect.

it seems like the more stuff i plug into the motherboard the less likely it will power on.

Sounds like your power supply is a gonner. Unplug everything but your vid card, hardrive. If you have multiple hardrives, just your master drive only and make sure you re-jumper it for single drive.

If you have a slot 1 MB, remove & put back the CPU. Check all your connections, did you put the cable backwards?
