Hi,

After having been recently divested of an unknown addiction to a snake oil app here, I am focusing on if there is anything I can do to maximize my broadband authentically using Windows.

I found lovely uTube video.....employing group policy editing (gpedit.msc)...saying if I enabled bandwidth limiting, I would find it was set on 20, and if I lowered it to zero, I would be thrilled and improved.

I believed it.:whiste:

So, I just did that. U think this too was snake oil? Cause it wasn't enabled to begin with. But when I enabled, I saw it was set on 20 and I put it on zero. I forgot to test before and after.

Did I accomplish anything??

did you do any "before and after" testing...

As I said, however pathetic, I forgot to do that....cause I was so excited buying into this the second I saw it, I ran to make command prompt and did it.

What I should totally do, is undo what I did, run RCN test, do it over and run another test, right?

As usual, I need to SLOW DOWN.

just run a speedtest now, if it's getting what you're paying for...just leave it.

God knows that there is a lot of Snake Oil issues around online forum. However the uTube above seem to be more a case of wishful thinking.

Windows has a lot of elaborate Networking related configuration. However almost all of them relates to the variety of specific demand in case of professional Enterprise setting with multiple Servers, Routers, Managed switches and other networking related devices.

In case of Home user that has a system consist on Internet Connection, Router, few computers and Devices that are organized as a Network Group, all of Windows' Network setting should stay at the default.

The setting that you played with is part of Qos that should actually be Unchecked in the TCP/IP properties and left alone.

To optimize the TCP/IP stack of Win 7 home computer, download this free portable App.

TCP Optimizer - http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
Optimize the TCP/IP stack as it instructed on the first tab.

MTU = 1500 for cable concretion and 1492 for DSL. In case of PPPoE DSL the PPPoE should be checked.

Look at the second tab (Advanced setting) set the Network Memory Allocation to Large Cache enable, and Size optimized 3.

Then Reboot.

P.S. If One likes trips to find the Holy Grail, there is a very good Indiana Jones movie about it.

Sigh. No, is now more complex than that. I need to fiddle more and see what I messed up cause I did not READ (see screenie below) before I leapt, I just leapt.:| It started out as not configured, I made it enabled and set it to zero. Now I put it on disabled.

New problem: formerly, the right download dial in the RCN test went up to 75 (their highest speed), and, when I would run it, often my speed was higher than the 25 I pay for, i.e., 31. Now, the dial only goes to 20.:|

OMG, why do I just leap?

Give me a minute to see what i messed up.

PREACH! I fear u nailed it. But was very erudite British guy in the uTube video, he sounded entirely sane. And people left comments saying, OMG this is amazing!:whiste:

Re left alone....I HEAR YOU, you are offering hard data; I will now try to return things to their pre-tampering by me....default.

Then, I will get yr app! THANK YOU.

Truth is, among my 550 DVDs comprising works from the 30s thru yesterday, I think I have almost no action movies.:sneaky:

I am not as dumb as I look....apparently, cept for Wed nites.

Again, and incredibly, what it seems I managed to do (see below), was to CHANGE THE METRICS on the actual RCN dials!

Formerly, the download dial went to 75. Now, it ends at 20.

U think that was some small accomplishment?:whiste:

OK I will now fix this! Put everything back to where it was, hoping that will include the RCN dials' metrics.

JackMDS!

Pls tell me re what is outlined in RED, where I put the bullet. I wanna put it in "optimal." Cause that is how I roll. But I need to stop fiddling. This system is perfect and issue free as I have configured it....why I keep fiddling compulsively to improve it....is just plain pitiable.

HOLD ON! I GOT IT. cause only when the bullet is in the "custom" circle, can I then use advanced settings to set cache enable on optimized 3.

Update:

1) after first returning the packet settings to not configured, configuring Jack's faublous app as he instructed and running it.....I rebooted.

2) Then, re my lunatic hope that now the RCN download dial would, as before earlier, have 75 as it's top metric, as if my fiddling somehow CHANGED THE DIAL (OMG, hahahahaha), I went to RCN speed test and dial was the same: 20 as the top metric.

3) Only then......did tiny LED go on in my head.....just maybe RCN did something to its dials and that just coincided with my compulsive fiddling with group policies re internet!

4) So I called RCN.....where they have brilliant American reps 24/7....and I got amazing JOY (who despises W8.1 as any intelligent human does).

I said prepare for lunatic question! And I asked re sudden dial change I see on my screen. She was like NO YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE!!!!!! Several subscribers have CALLED ABOUT THAT!

she then said, one guy who pays for their new top speed of 110 (Wut?????) called upset, cause HIS DIAL HAD CHANGED and only, SUDDENLY went to 20 and he was paying all this money for 110! But, this guy was brilliant, cause on the Phone with her, he had epiphany! He said, wait! Let me try in another bkrowser! And he opened IE! He went to RCN test in IE….and GUESS WHAT? there were the dials, the LEFT one now going to 110!!!

SERIOUSLY! So...I sat RIGHT DOWN, opened ie...WENT TO SPEED TEST AND there it was! Left dial going up to 110! I screamed Joy! guess what? she screamed too.

I ran test in new dial in Ie and got below. I am putting screenie so you do not think all of this dial changing was some lunatic hallucination.

Joy does hot know why, in both FX which this guy was in, Pale Moon which I use.....their left dial suddenly only goes to 20.....but she is submitting a ticket.

So alls well that ends OK.....many thanks to the kind and savvy helpers....I will try to stop fiddling and believing in Santa.

Finally, I asked joy what 110 costs. She said, $30 more than what you are paying for 25. Confusing, given I pay way more than that for my 25. But, No thanks, what I have I good enough for me.:|

O look!!!!!!

Maybe Cybergod rewarding me for not having fiddled for 24 hours! Kidding.():)

Just ran new Speed Test in IE.....and I am getting over 37! While paying only for 25!

Wish RCN were not regional......cause, everything wrong with Comcast/Time Warner (people gotta speak up about that, guy said it on Bill Maher, only THEN will merger be precluded).....is beyond right in RCN!

I am just crazy about dials. And moving needles.

HOLD ON! Just opened RCN Speed Test in Pale Moon....and now, it is fixed! Left dial does to 110! I guess Joy submitting the ticket got fast response!
