What is the difference between a digicam and SLR? They are both digital. Isn't it just the SLR costs a boat load of money and can change lenses vs. the digicams that have fixed lenses and are reasonably cheap

Uhhh... they're not both digital. There are digital SLRs, but there are film SLRs as well... many people still think film SLRs are better than anything digital, which I somewhat agree with. SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex. Check out this page for more information: http://science.howstuffworks.com/camera.htm

Ahh..thanks for the link.

If it's within the grace period, he should really return the Kodak. They may have made a name for themselves in the film market, but their digital products are mostly garbage.

Yes! dpreview and www.digitalcamera-hq.com were my main 2 sites.

This camera stood out from all the others in same pixel/price/ratings range in one important feature: 10x zoom (most others have about 3x)

Wow, I didn't realize Kodak was so frowned upon....

Anyways, I had a regular lense, 200mm zoom, wide angle and a doubler thingy.

Gimme a couple days and I think I'll be able to tell if it was wise. As far as the brand goes, I think it's a solid camera for the price of $320

Return it and get this. 10x optical zoom and image stabilization.

I have 2 AE-1s and several lenses, filters, etc. I'll never give them up. I use my digital more these days for family snapshots and such but I still love breaking our my AE-1s every once in a while and I always bring at least one with me when I travel.

I sold my Minolta x700 rig about 2 years ago. I wanted to sell it while I could still get something for it. I occasionally regret it (especially all the specialty gear like bellows) but overal it was a good decision.

don't worry about the kodak. Everyone around here thinks they're the next Ansel Adams or some other great photographer. They're not. Most probably couldn't tell the difference between a pic taken with a good Kodak versus a pic taken with a similarly priced Canon or Nikon. It's just fun to bash Kodak like it's fun to bash Microsoft or Apple.

No, Kodak is really that bad. I have used enough of them to warrant the dislike.

And you are probably experienced enough and take enough pictars (especially judging by your sig, nice Hawaii pics BTW) to notice the difference. My point was not everybody is like that especially the fanbois on this forum. There are a lot of people who are quick to bash something just because of brand name even when the item in question suits their needs just fine. I admit I and my wife not picture takin fools and our Kodak 5MP works just well for us. Although I wish I had a better optical zoom...

At the very least, you should have saved your glass, and sold the body, so you could use them on a new Digital SLR.

Kodak cameras are a joke. Yeah, they work for your family snapshots, but beyond that, they get limited very quickly. Enjoy the new toy.

AE-1 glass won't mount on an EOS body.

Back in the hayday of the 10X Kodak that you just bought the Olympus 10X C-750 was its competitor. Don't worry, both are fine cameras and your Kodak is perfectly capable of producing stunning pictures if you have the skill and knowhow. The Canon 10x with image stabilization that someone linked above wouldn't even be an option for me because 3MP simply doesn't give me enough resolution to work with, and the image stabilization, while nifty, is unneccesary because I can handhold my C-750 rock steady at 10X anyway.

So you got a Kodak. I say go out, get some amazing shots with it, and then post them back here for all the Kodak haters to oogle over.

As for selling your SLR... I guess you'll be saving a lot of money on prints and developing. Unless you plan on doing prints over 8x10 you won't see a significant quality increase.

The AE-1 was my first SLR. I moved onto the T-90 and Contax RTS-2 after it. It was great except that my light meter was broken so I had to guess everything. Taught me how to judge lighting well though.

How about this camera?

That's what I want for my next digicam. I'll hold off on a DSLR until the full-frame sensors make their way down from $8k bodies😉

Look at it this way. People are going nutz over digital cameras, and they are dumping SLR's for ridiculous prices.
So, when you scratch up a few bucks, you can pick up another (and maybe better) SLR for next to nothing.

huh, didn't think of that
