Did I just screw up?

I sold my Canon AE-1 with 4 lenses and flash so I could by a Kodak DX6490 digital camera.

I love the dig, but I'm feeling bad about my beloved camera...

Comments or advice?

Yeah, the first thing everyone told me when I started looking at digicams was never to buy a Kodak.

So that's pretty much screwing up.

Look at it this way. People are going nutz over digital cameras, and they are dumping SLR's for ridiculous prices.
So, when you scratch up a few bucks, you can pick up another (and maybe better) SLR for next to nothing.

35mm SLRs have significantly more resolution than all digicams save the EOD 1Ds Mark II.

Also, most non-SLR digicams have poor low-light capabilities.

But the benefits of digicams are aplenty. I find myself using my digicam a lot more nowadays because I can shoot 4-5 shots of each scene and pick my favorite.

yes, you made a mistake w/ kodak 😛 But as far as ditching SLR for the P&S digicams... that all depends on what you're shooting for and how much convenience you want.

I checked a few sites and the 6490 was highly rated.... hmmmm

Anyways, it does have a manual mode so I can control a lot of variables. I love the benefits of digital (and I don't have a ton of money to spend)... oh well, I guess it's mainly going to take some time and see if it was worth it.

wow

I know. WTF?

And what review site did you read? It can't be dpreview.com and steves-digicams.com. But hey, it's your money and you like it, so...

Yes! dpreview and www.digitalcamera-hq.com were my main 2 sites.

This camera stood out from all the others in same pixel/price/ratings range in one important feature: 10x zoom (most others have about 3x)

Wow, I didn't realize Kodak was so frowned upon....

Anyways, I had a regular lense, 200mm zoom, wide angle and a doubler thingy.

Gimme a couple days and I think I'll be able to tell if it was wise. As far as the brand goes, I think it's a solid camera for the price of $320

You might have bought a decent digicam, but you should have kept the AE-1. Those are great cameras. Damn solid, and work very well.

You did fine. It's a good camera, btw. Kodak just trashed their reputation over the last few years, by releasing quite the collection of garbage products. However I think they noticed that their film sales/processing revenue is dropping like a rock so they appear to be doing everything they can to get back into the camera game.

don't worry about the kodak. Everyone around here thinks they're the next Ansel Adams or some other great photographer. They're not. Most probably couldn't tell the difference between a pic taken with a good Kodak versus a pic taken with a similarly priced Canon or Nikon. It's just fun to bash Kodak like it's fun to bash Microsoft or Apple.

Ansel Adams is my brother in law

I would have kept the SLR myself. Heck, I spent nearly $800 on a 35mm SLR last year. Better then any digicam for the money.

At the very least, you should have saved your glass, and sold the body, so you could use them on a new Digital SLR.

Kodak cameras are a joke. Yeah, they work for your family snapshots, but beyond that, they get limited very quickly. Enjoy the new toy.

No, Kodak is really that bad. I have used enough of them to warrant the dislike.

What is the difference between a digicam and SLR? They are both digital. Isn't it just the SLR costs a boat load of money and can change lenses vs. the digicams that have fixed lenses and are reasonably cheap

Uhhh... they're not both digital. There are digital SLRs, but there are film SLRs as well... many people still think film SLRs are better than anything digital, which I somewhat agree with. SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex. Check out this page for more information: http://science.howstuffworks.com/camera.htm
