So I just got a retail 1.6A P4. I installed the cpu, then I put on the heatsink. I didn't use any paste or anything, I assumed the black rubbery stuff on the bottom was some thermal stuff or something. Well the cpu isn't posting and the black stuff is like rubbing off onto the cpu.

Did I do something very wrong? Should I have peeled off the black stuff or something??

Help me out

Pull the cpu out make sure you put it back in with the corner without the pins corresponding to the corner of the socket with no holes, push the locking bar down all the way reinstall the heatsink and see what happens. If that doesn't work pull the ram out and reseat it,taking care to put it in the right way.If that doesn't work try reseating all the expansion cards and cables.Let us know how things go.Good luck!

What motherboard and other specs are you using???

I ask cause the asus p4s333 mobo's quick reference sheet is backwards and will lead you to set all of your case wires incorrectly....

So the black thermal stuff is sticking to the cpu now-

and I can't get it to post, or get any beep codes

Without a cpu the mobo immediately says "no cpu detected" everytime, leading me to believe the chip is bad.

Do I really have to rma???

He better hope he put the CPU in the right way or else those bent pins will take forever to straighten out! Seriously though, it's pretty difficult to install the CPU the wrong way, the pins just won't go in unless it's seated correctly.

gseiner - the black stuff is the thermal pad that comes with the heatsink; it's SUPPOSED to fuse to the cpu to make a seal (kind of like thermal grease except that stuff melts whereas grease stays viscous). As for not booting, that's weird. Make sure the heatsink is oriented correctly and locked into place (make sure the tabs go all the way to the other side). If the heatsink isn't properly locked into place, it probably wouldn't boot.

at least post which motherboard you have etc.

i know that one of the abit p4 boards won't take the northwood w/o a bios flash.

the black stuff is thermal stuff so it doesn't need to come off and it would not be the reason that your not posting.

The MB he referrs to would be the Abit TH7II 850 board. The 38 bios updates to accomodate Northwoods.

I'd be interested in hearing about this whole black stuff coming off the HS and sticking to the CPU as well. I have the same thing, waiting for my RMA'd mobo to get replaced, and I wanna have a heads up so I don't screw something up!

what's up with the whole black stuff?

May be that:
Did you put 12V 4 pin connector to MB?
P4 boards have additional ATX12V connector or use HD power connector.
Yor antec PS must be 300XP, not 300X, unless HD connector on the MB

the rubbery patch can be used just once or twice. Then it gets unusable. Remove it
and use paste instead. But chances are the heatsink won´t clamp as tight as before.
