Did I just fry my motherboard?

I was gettin ready to listen to some music, dad just got home so I went to plug in some head phones. I did, and about 2 seconds later my computer shut off. I thought I may have hit the power button by mistake, so I hit the power butter again. The lights on my case came on, and the fans spun..for about a second, then it shut off. Woudlnt come back on. i unpluged the cmputer let it sit for 5 and tried agian, same thing. Came on then went off. I tried a new cable and wall socket, same thing. Then I unpluged the PSU from the motherboard, took a piece of wire and crossed the 3rd and 4th pin. All my case lights cam on, the fans all spun, everything lookes as it should. That ruled out the power supply going. Plugged in back in, and sure enough, came on then went back off. unplugged all my drives, so that the only thing that was plugged in was the ATX power, nothing. Does this mean I fried my motherboard, or coudl it be somethign else?

Why did you cross the 3rd and 4th pins? That sounds dangerous.

In any event, from the sounds of it, you had static electricity somehow jump from your headphones to your motherboard. I've been told that a static charge like that can short out your computer. That would be my first suspicion, but it's pretty much impossible to tell what got shorted. The easy answer would be your motherboard.

Did you smell burning?

You should test your components on another computer if possible before jumping to any conclusions.

All you do is take a copper wire and stick it in the 3rd and 4th pin, basically the same thing your motherboard does when you hit the power button, it always you to test the PSU without a switch to turn it on. And as far as smells or smoke, there were neither, it just turned off. And what components should I be testing? I already verified that the power supply works fine..what other parts woudl cause my comptuer to not turn on. Not hard drives or anything else because I unhooked all those.

Try reseting the CMOS, it should be around your battery. Read your mobo-manual.

Yeah, thats what I am doin...I dont have the manual, so im downloading acrobat and getting it online, gunna take me a minute or two...im a bit confused tho, just above the battery it sats clr_cmos, but there is no jumper...maybe I just have to take the battery out?

Your CPU and memory would be the most critical things to test. After that check the videocard. I'm pretty sure your system can post w/o a videocard though.

How long does it stay on before turning itself back off? Do any lights turn on? If so, how many and what color(s)?

Another thing to try would be to run w/ 1 stick of memory if you have more than one right now, and you can try it in different slots.

Disconnect all of your PCI cards for the time being just in case. Were you using a seperate sound card or was it built into the motherboard?

allright...while im using the memory in this comptuer right now no problem. For lights comeing on, my case (x-dreamer II) has blue leds in the front that came on...I dont have my power led hooked up so I cant tell you if that comes on. All the fans come on also, but its all for a second max then it goes back out. And the sound card was an Audigy 2.....

whew...had the battery out as I typed this (to reset the board) just popped it back in and the system came out. This was w/o the video card in...this shoudl let me know where the problem was...thanks to the guys who suggested a reset tho

geez, I cant believe it, you guys never told me reseting my mobo means I have to re-adjust my clock 😀...I am back on my computer and its working so far....and I dont know if it was the cause, but I am pretty pissed at myself for this anyways. Upon putting my graphics card back in I noticed a screw sitting on my sound card....i dont know how it got there but i shouldnt have any loose screws, that could have been the cause. Either way, I am a bit disapointed this got solved, I really needed an excuse to buy a better motherboard...

seriously though, thanks to all who posted with suggestions, I didnt at all expect to be fixed in 10 minutes... *looks back at first post*...i actualyl said holy **** outloud...its been a half hour already. It seems like its been 10 minutes or less since my 1st post. Either way anand rocks...i got one responce saying my system is dead and i have to replace it over and hardforum.
