I think a lot of people know my car: 2000 Toyota Echo.

A month ago I took it offroading in Flagstaff on the Forest Roads. Lots of big rocks and stuff. Managed to punch a nice hole somewhere in the exhaust system, and the car sounded really boomy as a result. Just today I took it offroading again, driving on some unmaintained, washboard/volcanic rock road in the desert in Mojave National Preserve pretending I was a rally driver at some points. Took a few HARD hits, like floorboard-raising hard, and now the car sounds normal again.

So did I fix things? Fuzzy teh mekanic?

Are you sure you punched a hole in the muffler, or did the pipe to the muffler come loose? If so, maybe the connection from the pipe to the muffler went back into place.

Only explanation I can come up with right now.

Sounds like it. I can't think of any other reason why this would happen.

Also, why the heck are you taking an echo on those trails?

as far as i know the muffler was intact. the sound came from around the shift knob area.... i had this kind of thing happen before. i was on the highway and i suddenly heard a loud exhaust. hole in the exhaust pipe between the cat. converter and muffler. they welded a tube in place to fix it.

i'm taking it off road because i need pictures. the thing's a beast.

I'll be sure to pull you back to the road if I see you on any of the trails (I live in Phoenix). Of course, your echo will probably do just as well as that retarded jeep compass.

 Maybe you should look at a small truck, like a Ranger or something that wouldn't matter if it broke.

nope. everything's stock. the rims are stock with no hubcaps. i'm picking up a full sized spare tomorrow. i installed my own tach - cuz they don't come with one even if it's a stick, and my subwoofer is from my logitech z-5500 hooked up to a 400w inverter.

No way to tell for sure without looking at the exhaust. Go to a shop, tell them the situation, and I'm sure they'll put it on the lift to take a look. Make sure you tell them you did it offroading - they may fix it for free just for the enjoyment you gave them :D

Trust me fuzzy, you didn't go offroading.

If you did, your bumper and front end would be smashed in because that car will not climb over rocks :p
