Just bought a Cendyne 16x10x40 CD/RW and it posts as "Teac W516EB" which should be correct, but when i boot to Win98SE, I can't access the drive! Under Device Manager, it shows it as "(CD-ROM Drive)" under the CD-ROM devices. Did I just buy a bad drive??

Have you loaded the cd-burning software that came with it?

No, why would i need to install Nero to see the drive under Device Manager? The reason I dont wanna open the software is because I might have to return it. The package did not come with any driver disk.

You can't burn without the software. Until then, the unit is in fact, just a cdrom. If it doesn't work with the burning software, then you start worrying.

Also, do you have the jumpers set properly for master or slave?

How am I gonna burn if I don't even see the cd-rom drive letter?? I don't see how installing Nero will give me a drive E: for my CD-RW...I'm afraid if i open Nero, I might not be able to return the drive.

All optical drives appear as cdrom drive in windows. A burning program such as nero, diskjuggler, fireburner etc will differentiate them.

A program like powerdvd or windvd or any software dvd player will automatically detect a dvd rom drive even though windows labels it as a cd rom drive

The reason why windows detects all optical drives as cdroms is becuase Windows its self does nto have and dvd player or burning capabilities

<< Under Device Manager, it shows it as "(CD-ROM Drive)" under the CD-ROM devices. Did I just buy a bad drive?? >>

So it does or doesn't show up in device manager?

I know its a dumb question but do you have the correct slave/master jumper setting on the drive. Have you tried switching the drive's order?

what other drives do you have on the system.

without software installed, it is indistinguishable from a standard CD-ROM drive. as in, appears the same to the BIOS & to the OS. if its not appearing, check that you have the cables in right, its hooked up to power, etc. (I'm assuming that is an internal IDE drive)

if it shows up under device manager and you dont have a drive letter, you are doing something wrong... I dont think thats possible. If it is detected, install the burning software. That wont keep you from being able to return it; if it does, make a really big stink.

You can see it under device manager (as CD-rom drive), but you can't see the drive letter in windows explorer, right??

My guess is you haven't set the Master/slave jumper correctly on your drive...

Ok, Just tried installing the drive in my other computer and it shows up fine in Device Manager as "Teac W516EB" and drive letter E: under Windows Explorer. I think something's wrong with my Win98SE, i'm gonna try and reinstall it in a few minutes, anyone else hae any other suggestions? thanks for the help!

<< So it does or doesn't show up in device manager? >>

It just shows up as "(CD-ROM Drive)" When it should really show up as "Teac W516EB" My other computer does not have any burning software installed either.

depending on what IDE drivers you're using (ie. VIA ide bus master VSD or miniport), the drive will show up differently...

as long as it is being detected at all - nero should recognize it as the correct drive.
i think u're OK...paranoia off.

OK, so you're going to reinstall windows because you think your burner might not work? For cryin' out loud, if you don't want to open your software(not sure why), just download the demo like someone else suggested and try it first, reinstall isn't good when its completely unnecissary, and you'll be right where you are now.

OK, installed demo, and then ezcd full version, drive letter still didn't show up in windows explorer and still didn't detect the drive as Teac in Device Manager...just reinstalled windows and now detects it fine..
