Here's the story in short:

A friend of mine Hooked up a 900 tbird on a Chaintech 7 AJA mobo with a 235!!
(I know way too low) PS. It posted but froze on windows start up screen.
(This I understand, cause imho its due to the ps a powerman FSP235 60 GT)
He replaced his Matrox G400 MAX AGP with a PCI videocard to see if that would help.
It didn't. Booting from floppy it froze on where you can choose to boot with or without CDrom. He was able to enter the Bios until then.

He now left with the power on and the system frozen (don't ask me why)
When he came back all was black, he couldn't enter bios, no post beep, NOTHING.
Power led on mobo was on, but that was all.

I picked up his mobo, cpu, and fan after he called me for help. What I noticed was that his fan was turned 180*, and after I turned it right, I noticed it sometimes didn't spin up. Sometimes it needed a little push and then it started. But still zilch nada nothing.

I'm afraid that during his absense the cpu fan didn't work and the tbird toasted itself.
But I REALLY hope this isn't it. Please give me some advice/tips/info on what else it could be and what could be done.

This is how I tried

My ps Aopen FSP300 60GT
1 stick 128Mb pc133 Kingston ValueRam
1 mitsubishi Floppydrive
1 working PCI video card
15" Amaga monitor

this is what I think. just take another amd chip (doesn't really matter what speed it is), put it in and see if it boots. if so, your friend's 900 is toasted...

and really sounds to me it is, since a 900 tbird without a fan usually can stand for about 7 secs...

no active cooling on these chips and they go kablooie.
i found out the hard way w/ my duron.

let me tell you a secret [evil laugh] get some autodegreaser, clean the chip, and return it. they'll send you a new chip asap.

ever since this happened to me (the chip dying and AMD sending me a new one), i have bought over 10000 in AMD stock and have purchased only their chips. very impressive to me.

There are two methods you can use to check:

1)Try your CPU in another AMD board.
2)Try another CPU in your board.

As a client of mine found out last week, it is much safer to try your CPU in another board (where it would just hang/non-boot or possibly give 5 or 7 beeps) , he borrowed his Boss's 550 (SlotA) and instantly fried it.(not good!)
Turns out his M.B.(FIC) was toast. I tried his 500 in my board and it was fine.

There are no cracks or whatever on the chip visible.

I'll try it in another mobo as soon as I find someone with one. If that takes too long I'll try and return it monday. D@mn, well atleast he just paid $240 for it.

Depends if you have a good heatsink and thermal paste i think your cpu can survive 7 days. I have A fop32-1+artic silver i feel compeletly save if the fans turn off

Who knows maybe your lucky. I can't believe nobody is telling him to try another power supply. The heatsink could have been making enough contact to cool it,maybe. I know its doubtfull but he did say he only had a 235 watt ps,right?
