Did I hurt my hard drive (much)?

I was formatting/partitioning a brand new WD 100GB and, ok, I was a lazy bastard and had it resting (semi-)vertically on it's anti-static bag on the floor - half suspended by the cable, half leaning against the open case. Jumper was set to slave and it was attached to the same IDE cable as the master. Format and partitioning went well. Then, I disconnected the old drive, set the new one as stand alone and tried to boot for new O/S install..... the thing made the loudest, scariest 7200 rpm metal slapping metal sound I've ever heard! Quick power strip OFF switch stopped everything. I took a few minutes to compose myself, then I stuck it in the HD cage but still had the whole assembly resting vertical. Re-booted, did a few partition (Magic) changes for other reasons and no problems since. Can the half-assed 'bare' positioning cause such horror? Could the drive be damaged? Scandisk found no errors but I find it hard to believe that noise had no effect on the platters.

Thanks

I'd do a surface scan to see for sure that nothing's wrong, then watch it carefully cause it almost suonds like a spindle bearing.

It's not suggested that a HDD, once formatted, have it's orientation changed. That said, the sound you heard was the drive heads repositioning themselves to work in the new position. If it works, you're golden.

I would reformat it in it's permanent position, but that's just me.
