Did I hear someone say that the Thoroughbreds are unlocked?

I thought I read in here that the new Thoroughbreds come factory unlocked. Is that true? Just got an 1800+ and there is no trough between the L1 bridges as on the older XPs...so even if it isn't it should be easier to unlock manually....maybe even pencil-trick again.

you guys aren't trying to find thorooughbred versions of the chips are you? I thought everybody hated them because the small die size makes them so hard to cool. I'm planning to upgrade to 2100 or 2200+ soon and I'm just hoping I can find one that's palomino

I don't recall Pally's ever being made in 2100+ and 2200+...didn't they stop with the 2000+???

My 1700+ T-bred is unlocked as well, its pit-free!!! 😀 It also runs about ~5 C cooler than my Pally, but some of that probably has to do with its much lower default voltage.

I'm not sure about all the Tbreds, but I have heard that the L1 bridges have not been laser cut on the 2400+ early releases.
The L3 bridge(s) have been cut though and you need these unlocked to use the lower multiplyers on the KT266a/KT333 mobos, but supposedly the KT400 is unaffected and can be done without unlocking the L3.

? I thought everybody hated them because the small die size makes them so hard to cool.
The small die size should make them even easier to cool, not to mention the fact that they don't take as much voltage.

No, the Palomino is also in the 2100+ flavor, as well as the 2200+. There is no Palomino above the 2200+.

Actually I have it running at 1.66 GHz right now, air colled with an SLK-800 and 50 CFM fan and some Evergreen Thermagic paste (supposed to be the best) at about 35C idle. That's about 10 degrees cooler than my old 1700+ Palomino. So my guess is that it is actually easier to cool given the .13 micron process. It runs at lower voltage too, which should make it cooler as well.

My 1700+ TBred is locked. Runs 166fsb with absolutely no strain, though. I would try higher but I just don't think the memory can take 200fsb.

Thats not quite correct. In fact the Pallys ended with the 2100+. 2200+ and higher are all t-breds. There was never a 2200+ Pally
The pallys were the model 6 athlon xp processor and maxed out at 2100+. T-Breds are all model 8 Athlon xp processors and include the 2200+. this information can all be verified in Amds tech docs on their website.

ok back to thoroughbred thermal properties: (maybe I should start a new thread....oh well)
I really thought there was evidence proving that they're much harder to cool (run much hotter with same hsf) than a palo of the same speed

who has some statistics?

There's a deduction that newer boards would be able to run the new CPUs unlocked compared to the older boards. For those who could run in an unlock multiplier, please post what mobo you're using.

Quote from AMD website:
The new AMD Athlon? XP processor, code-named ?Thoroughbred,? is the first AMD desktop processor manufactured on state-of-the-art 130 nanometer copper technology and is the newest member to the family of seventh-generation AMD Athlon processors designed to meet the computationally-intensive requirements of software applications running on high-performance desktop systems. The new AMD Athlon XP processor based on 0.13 micron process technology increases the performance scalability provided by QuantiSpeed architecture by delivering higher clock speeds with lower thermal power. With the manufacturing process shrink from 0.18 micron to 0.13 micron technology, the new AMD Athlon XP processor consumes up to around 25 percent less power when operated at the same frequency as the current AMD Athlon XP processor based on the ?Palomino? core. The 0.13 micron process technology shrink provides the thermal headroom necessary to scale frequency within the thermal limits of desktop platforms, thus maximizing overall performance.

I also have the A7N8X and am running my 1700+ tbred at 9 x 200 (1.8ghz). This is with a 256 stick of Corsair 3500 c2 ram at the most agressive settings.

Love this board.

I have a 1700+ Tbred (unlocked) running on my GF's K7S5A w/ the Honey o/c bios. Unfortunately I do not see a clock or voltage adjustment, so I only have a choice of 150 or 166 FSB, and I can run 150 using PC2100.

Palomino ended with the 2100+ all 2200+ and higher are tbred. check the amd tech docs.

We've covered this before. Palomino 2200+'s have been released. Newegg was selling them to name just one source.
