I had to run 2 miles as fast as I could for wellness class in college, and I really pushed myself. I ended up doing it in 12 mins (2 6 min miles), and after i was done needless to say i was short on breath, but my heart hurt really badly and the whole left side of me went numb for like an hour, anyone know if I should be worried about this or if I just pushed myself too far and I should be ok now?

I would say that would be cause for concern.

I left my internet EKG equipment at work, so I can't help. Follow the above advice.

Get off the computer and go to a doctor!

If half my body went numb for an hour, yes, I'd be worried :Q

Yeah, you really should've been under 11min. Actually I'd have to say good job with the 12min time. We only do 1.5miles, but that still took me just a tad over 9min the first time I did it.

I'd be interesting in knowing this answer as well because I have felt a similar feeling after really demanding activity.

Running that hard is not good for you. I would take it easy, then do one mile after a week or so. If the problem is still there, see a doc. 2 miles in 12 minutes is awesome, I'm not surprised this happened.

Its not a heart attack, it probably due to lack of oxygen in your muscles after running so hard. And yes, please dont do this in the future.

I would get that checked out. Some tall tell signs of a Heart Attack are
1. A sharp pinpoint pain in your heart
2. Throbbing pain that radiates out your left side and down your left arm. It will travel down to your upper abdomen or up to the jaw
3. Dyspnea
4. an irregular heart rate, and one that is either bradycardia or tachycardia

Just a short list
go to the doctor

My problem is that i feel ok now, so Im not too worried about it, i know my computer does some weird things when i push it too hard, so its probably the same

I just need to get back into shape and not try to run like I used to after a few years of working on computers :p

Yes, That's correct; Computers and the human body are made of the same thing (matter) and react exactly the same when pushed too hard (do wierd things) so just relax and everything will be just fine. If not, try re-booting your brain and heart.

OMFG, you are too funny.

The only way to REALLY know if you had heart damage or ischemia (lack of oxygen to the heart) is with a 12 lead EKG. Paramedics (me :D ) in Las Vegas have 12 lead monitors and can tell in a few seconds if you have heart damage, or ischemia. Heart damage can be from many things and chest pain is one of many symptoms, but not all of them. Numbness in the left arm is another, although that is not specific to heart problems, nor is heart damage limited to numbing only the arm.

Your best bet is to get checked out by a doctor or medic. Here in LV we only charge if we transport, so call and see if that is true for you also. If so you can have the paramedics run a 12 lead (if they can do that where you are) and see what they say for free. I never minded doing that for people.

Better safe than sorry (dead).

Or if you have health insurance go visit the doc and pay your $25 copay so your doctor and bill and make a living.

Yes, I know most docs aren't lacking for money but lets just say there are too many patients these days that want something for nothing. I have a lot of friends that are residents and constantly get stories about getting calls from patients late at night for stupid things like "can you write a prescription for antibiotics for my kid? he/she is running a fever..."

In my opinion, Medical Care should not be run like a business.

Step one: Do not ask forums for important medical advice.
Step two: Do ask your doctor.

Get checked out, better safe than sorry.
