I'm a new supervisor in my company, overseeing a group of 8 people and their work. In addition to other company goals, we also have a Quality assurance team monitor their work and give feedback as needed.

Today, one of my people came to me and said that one of during her one-on-one coaching with the quality assurance coach, she felt that the coach was sounding very condecending, and almost talking down on her.

This was a bit unexpected and I did not know how to react, so I offered for herto tell me more about it. I advised her that I am able to go ahead and talk to the coach about it if needed, but I want her to give me more support. i,e specific examples of things the coach said that would offend her. I couldn't really solve the problem, but I just told her think about it and tell me more.

Question: was this the right approach? Does that sound like I"m just brushing her off? I hope I did not sound like I did not care. would their be better way to handle it?

No - you did what was correct - you'll need more information before speaking to the coach...

I think what you did was correct. The person you're supervising now knows that you are concerned about how they feel because you took time to explore the problem. Even if you aren't completely able to fix the problem with the coach the person you're supervising will hopefully feel like you're on their side.

Make sure you document it and let the worker know. It will make them feel better.

EDIT:

And should be business practice anyway on something like this...
