Did I get the wrong brake pads?

I have an '02 Durango and need to change the brakes again. I've done it before but this time I was given brake pads with an extra piece on them.

Here's a picture of the old and new brake pad.

Notice the piece that goes form the middle and out around the left side. The original pads don't have this and I've never seen it before.

I can still get the pad in place but then the clip that I took off won't go back on.

Here's the pads in place:

And here's the clip that is supposed to go on there to hold everything together:

Do I need to return these and get different pads or do I not need the clip any more? The clip keeps the outside edge of the caliper pulled down onto the rotors so I think it's somewhat important but I can't put the clip on with that extra piece on the pads.

Any help would be great.

It looks like the pads you bought have that clip built in, to some extent. Does it feel like it's going to wiggle out or move?

The other thing is that the pads aren't labeled (that I can see) to tell which go on the driver's side and which og on the passenger's side. But the clip could go in the front or the back depending on which side I put them on. Very strange.

I'm not sure how loose they feel as I didn't screw on the calipers and such yet since I thought I might just have the wrong pads. But that clip doesn't feel very strong to do much when I compare it to the very strong separate clip that I took off.

without actually being there to poke at it i'd guess its a built in anti-rattle clip. I'd run them without the extra piece and see what happens. worse case scenario you can always modify them to retain your original clip.

From what I see in pic 3, it appears that clip must be in place to keep the caliper in place.

I'm a little confused on the clip on the pad. Are you saying that pad can be mounted inboard or outboard? Because if the other pad has no clip, you could make it work from what I see. In other words are there two pads with clips and two without?

Regardless, take everything back to where you purchased them and show them what's going on. They may have pulled the wrong box off the shelf or whatever.

Don't mess around with brakes, you have to be sure you have it right.

Edit: Does the vehicle come in 2WD and 4WD? I bet they sold you pads for the other application.

Well, the Napa place I got them from is closed on Sundays so I went to AutoZone and got different pads. It is a 4WD SUV so who knows what they gave me. And yes, there are 2 pads with no clips but 3 pressure bracket type things (those go on the inside) and two with the dual pressure bracket things that each have the one clip thing sticking out the side. But I could take either of the outer pads and put it on either side which would mean the clip thing could be in the front or back.

Anyway, it's a non-issue since I got new pads and just got done putting them on. I'll just return the other ones tomorrow and not worry about it.

Thanks.
