Ok, here is my sad little story. About 6 weeks ago my parents PC took a nosedive. They were going o buy a pre-built K6-500 with some cheap internals. I convinced them to let me build them one ( Why not, I have built 3 others already) for just a little more money but better quality parts and expandability. So we head off to the local PC store and we get a Celly 566, Asus cuv4x board, 64mg PC100, WD 10gig DMA/66, voodoo 3 2000, SB live Value and a gorb and just a generic case. Nothing fancy , just enough for them. So I get it together after a week or so ( I have a life too) and when it first fires up it starts to hang while me and the wife are setting the periferals in the bios. After about 10 re-boots we start getting errors that say the CPU speed cannot be detected. So after 2 hours we call it a night. I go to the store a few days later and they swap me boards as they think that's the culprit. Now we finally get it going and we load the OS. I take it to my parents and set it up and with in 24 hours it hangs on them. We think it's the RAM. so back to the store, they swap RAM and we go home. Next day, it hangs again, we re-load W98 and all the board drivers. a few days later, it hangs. Now its been at least 3 weeks and we are getting no where. I'm pissed the wife is pissed and so are my parents. So we take it to the store for them to fix it. 2 days later they say it's fixed. They disable the on-board sound as it is conflicting with the SB and the load the latest drivers for the SB. Sounds good to me. Get it home, hangs with in 7 hours. back to the store. Now they say the CPU is incompatable with the board and we need a Coppermine. WTF!
BUT.....our 566 is now past the 25 day warranty and they won't refund us for it. So I go to the store today. The guy says the 566 won't work with the board but a coppermine will. I say "whats the difference between a celly and a CM, except that the LL2 cache is disabled". He say "Um, I don't know". I say there is no way I should get the shaft for a Chip that has spent over a week in their store and that hasn't worked for more then 24 hours strait. He goes to the back and comes back and says he will give my 30% of the purchase price($99) for it. It was $119 when I bought it. I say how much I think that sucks but I take the Coppermine 600 anyways. For another $165. So he installs the new chip and gives me the PC back. I ask him where my old 566 is and he says it's back on the shelf because there is nothing wrong with it. So now some other poor sap is going to get this little beauty. As a parting shot I tell him that the shouldn't advertise a board that will support a celly if in fact it won't. Here is the good part, he say's but it does support it. WTF. So I ask him if supporting it and it running are to different things. He says yes. So does he think that re-booting every day is normal... I have never been so pissed in my life. On the way out the door I say very loudly in front of the other customers that I will never be back to buy any of there SH!T again. So, did I get the shaft

I also just noticed that Russ's store is about 15 minutes from my house so I know where I will do my shopping from now on.

If the guy said the board didn't "run" the chip, he's full of crap. The CPU must me flaky. The CUV4X works with whatever Socket 370 you stick in it! :p

As far as being a jerk about giving you $99 for a CPU you paid $119 for, that's not so bad! Think about it. You could've "borrowed" the CPU for 25 days for all he knows and only paid $20 for that service! Cool! So, that aspect I can understand. There's a few putz customers out there that take advantage of loopholes so much that retailers have to set up "rules" to keep them in line that screws it up for the rest of us. :(

No, I paid $119, he gave me 30% of the price it is now,$99. So I got $30 for it.

So I lost $89 and the POS never run for more then a day. Then I had to buy a 600E for another $165, that's minus my $30 rebate for the celly chip.

So in essence I paid almost $255 for a chip that they sell for $190.

The thing that chaps my hide the most is I convinced my parents this was they way to go and they lost more money and over a months worth of time on the deal and I'm the one who looked like a fool.

Yes, BBB. It'll take a few months, but if they care in the least bit about their business, they'll resolve the issue with you. I had to file a complaint with a small computer shack before. They tacked a $75 credit card fee onto a system I bought for my sister. Thing was, the $75 wasn't listed on the newspaper ad, and wasn't listed on the invoice I got. I complained to the guy and he just said tough luck.

Letter to the BBB, and 4 months later a check shows up for $75 with a letter stating that the salesperson has been released.

I'd say, at this point, your dealings with the store are done. Let the BBB handle things from here on out. It's in a store's best interest to resolve complaints with the BBB. Looks pretty bad on their record when they have an unresolved complaint.

You know 99% of the time a home builder thinks the CPU is a dud, there's nothing wrong with it.

Why don't you just face the fact its all Microsoft's fault, did you try any other OS on it?

So, even if its microsofts fault and another os works, what good does that do? His parents are not going to want to use linux.

perry: The BBB is worthless. They have a database of companies that people have complained about (half of those don't have legitamite beefs) and most companies ignore the letters because there is no threat of legal action. I say take the guy to small claims court. But really, what is < $100 worth compared to your time?

OH OH!!!! Good idea here! Does you town have a TV station that has a consumer reporter?!?!?! THAT'S HOW you get your money back IN SPADES!!!!

OEM is bad. If the guy had his return policy posted, your out of luck. Chances are it's too late for him to return the part to the distributor, so either he eats the loss or you do. Seeing as he probably made less than $100 in the entire cheap system, fat chance he's going to take it voluntarily.

Next time remember: intel retail cpu = 3 year warranty. intel oem cpu = 25 day warranty (up to 90 days). Pay the extra $10. It's worth it.

Jonny: Hmmm.... Interesting carrer change. :p :p :p

Stark: Yeah, I can picture the sign now: "CPUs HAVE A 25 DAY WARRANTY AND ARE SUBJECT TO A 75% RESTOCKING FEE".

Doh!

Contact the president of the company, but explain your story calmly and rationally. They hate to hear these things and will resolve them for you, because it is better for them to eat a few bucks and have a repeat customer, than to piss you off. Studies show that if you have a bad experience, you tell 10 people (on the average), but if you have a good experience, you tell less than one person (on average).

DaBrainDead,

Why do you always insist on puking all over yourself. You don't know jack about technology, so why don't you stick to talking about how wonderful the commie system is on that little prison island you call home.

Stallion,

This shop wouldn't happen to be located in Federal Way, would it?

Stallion, why don't you let us know the name of the shop that did this to you? I am sure there are other forum members from Seattle who won't give them any business and will also warn their friends . . .

Stallion,

Why don't you take the entire system back for a refund and get a system from Russ? Or do they have inordinate restocking fees?

I encountered the same lockup problem, try this and tell me if it works.. the motherboard you purchased might not have external cache built onto the motherboard.. go into your bios and disable external cache. good luck

djk,

Of course the motherboard doesn't have external cache built in; the L2 is on the processor.

Stallion,

DO NOT disable external cache, you'll be running at about half speed.

Yep, I'm familiar with them. Used to do a lot of business with them back when they were in a little tiny space up on 306th. They used to be VERY concerned with customer service, but as they've grown over the years, they seem to have lost sight of that.
