Did I get scammed?

My dad bought a new TV (Mitsu 65809) today at Fry's and they said they had this DVD player on sale that had component output. So, we got an Onkyo SP500 for $99. Is that a good price? I want a DVD Player w/ Component Output and will be able to play VCD's and go regionfree, whether it comes that way or I can flash/hack it.

They also scammed us on these Component and Fiber Optic cables.

I got Monster ULTRA Component Video 1000 8ft cables for $129.99. It says they are the THX Ultra 100 Series. Then they said for better surround sound (I have BOSE 5pc surround sound) to get some MONSTER ULTRA Fiber Optic 1000 8ft for $99.99. Is that decent prices, I saw a combination pack (Component and Fiber Optic) which was 4m @ BB for $79.99. So, did I get scammed by Fry's?

you allowed yourself to be scammed, yes. looks like it wasn't the first time judging by your owning bose products.

The Monster Cable hype has been debated on ATOT. By buying Monster products itself, you have been scammed.

I think the Onkyo is ok... considering its progressive scan... i'm not a DVD expert though... last time i saw those it was for $200.

But the monsters... i dunno... those things were scams in the first place.

Actually, the BOSE products I was completely against. But my mom insisted they were better even though they were like 3x as much as the Polk Audio ones.

Yeah, the monster cables are way overpriced (just like the Bose speakers).

As for the DVD player...I don't know that model specifically, but Onkyo is a good brand overall and $99 is a pretty typical price for DVD player so I'd say you did okay there.

I think you may have been taken on the cables.... I can't say about the DVD player, but it didn't sound like a bad deal.

The Onkyo plays VCD's and has progressive scan BTW.
Yeah, don't sweat it...the Onkyo is fine. There's very little difference between the various low cost DVD players anyway.

AFAIK, progressive scan only matters for HDTVs and projectors. A normal TV is interlaced.

you should return the cables, buy 40 dollars in replacement, and put the 160 you save toward upgrading your bose stuff ;)

seriously

why would you put 130 dollar cables on a 99 dollar dvd player?

ouch....yeah, return, as soon as you can. :) If you really need a brand name for your cables, you'll do just fine with the Acoustic Research cables...I used a few until I had some Canare's made, but that's a whole new story.

Congrats on the HDTV and DVD player tho...didn't really pay too much attention on them, as they sound fine (Mitsu TV = good = Onkyo DVD), but the cables.....scary.
