I am in the middle of building my first system. I bought a retail Duron 700 from buy.com. When I booted up after installed the motherboard, it shows as a Duron 600. Anyone know what's up?
Gee, usually the CPUFID of the MB for sensing the CPU multiplier is correct. But i did hear rumours of some defected detection. So although it's highly likely that you're ripped off, it could also be your MB. You could borrow another chip from someone and try it.
If they somehow got mixed]up and sent you a 600 instead of a 700Mhz, don't take it lying down, especially when the 700Mhz does overclock better.
Well, it could be unlocked, in which case the multiplier in the bios is most likely at the lowest possible setting...6. I know all of the motherboards I've used (including an Abit BE6...) have set themselves to the lowest possible multiplier and must be changed to auto or the correct multiplier before usage. However, since the multiplier can be adjusted with this processor (assuming its unlocked) then it would just underclock.
that could be it. The CPU is unlocked. But get this, I went into the BIOS and it gives me the option of going as low as 5X. Would it go that low or would it start at 6X as the lowest supported multiplier? Also, there is no setting for auto-detect.
I could have named the mobo you had before you said so. This is a perfectly normal occurance for any speed duron put on a KT7. No need to take your HS off, you didn't get ripped off.
You know what you do? Run sandra. It will read the chip ID from the chip and report it to you. Or anyway it does with my P3's. Because it reports it as a 600E overclocked to 840Mhz.
Zeeliv is right. It says on page 3-3 in the KT7 manual that you have to set the CPU speed. I have a KT7 raid and a Tbird 800 from buy.com and when I first booted up it said it was a 600 Athlon. It recognizes which chip (Athlon or Duron) but not the clock speed. A friend at work has a Duron 700 and it read 600. It is normal.
