Did I get a good deal? Golf club purchase

I heard about a guy selling some used clubs over the weekend, had a set of spaldings for 30 bucks.

Naturally I called him and naturally i was too late. He had some more clubs and told me to come over and take a look at them.

I ended up getting a used set of Hogan radial irons 3-wedge, 3 Apex titanium xds drivers, a putter and a bag for 50 bucks

A whole set of clubs for $50 sounds like a good deal to me. The clubs don't really matter much when you're learning to play anyway. It's only as you start shooting under 100 that you'll begin to appreciate differences in various sets of clubs. You'll be ready to buy new ones at that point anyway.

My first "real" set of clubs were $120 used (Lynx Parallax) and I actually still have them. I just can't justify $400+ on a new set when I consistenly shoot under 90 with these.

Hogans are nice, but I haven't heard specifically of that model. $50 for just the irons would've been good.

Anybody ever use these before? I have heard of Hogans but not Apex drivers nor the putter I chose. I picked them because of the grip as well as the near weightlessness of the drivers.

Are these your clubs?

They'll be less forgiving of mishits since they're kind of a muscleback design. Again, not all that big a deal for a beginner and arguably a good thing since you'll know when you didn't make clean contact with the ball.

The golfreview.com crowd seems to like them.

you probably did alright for yourself. It is impossible to buy new Irons for less than 200, and those are crap, especially if woods/metal woods are included.

sounds like the guy was just getting rid of his clutter.

You might consider getting the clubs regripped (about 2$ a club).... grips are important and don't last that long. Well, rather, they wear quickly to the point they don't provide the friction you want, easily within a season or two.

pardon my grammar bad.

😀

Golf clubs are like computer stuff. Your $400 bleeding-edge vid card will be worth about $40 a few years down the road. I picked up a Titleist 975D ti driver (the club half the pros were using three years ago) for $90 on Ebay. It may or may not be 5-10 yards shorter than the latest 400cc Ti-Launcher-Mega-Bubble whatever, but it still makes the ball go a long damn way. Ask vi_edit about that. 😀

I have a set of Custom built irons that i use. They cost me $200 for 3-SW. I use a Callaway Steelhead Plus Driver and some no name 3 and 5 woods I got off ebay. I shoot mid 80's with them. It is not the club but rather the swing that is associated with the club. Hell Greg Norman once said he could beat most people with a rock and a stick! 😀
