I too had a high end system in my youth. From what I can recall, caps weren't really needed for SQ setups as there wasn't much demand on your electrical system during the SQ judging.

I had 4 DVC Phoenix Gold 12" subs rocking off a Phoenix Gold ZX 600 Ti amp (man that thing was a beast...Phoenix Gold actually redesigned the circuitry inside because of my system setup and I got the very first redesigned one....I kept blowing them up until they were redesigned) 141 db

Yeah, I looked into caps, but never saw the need for my setup. Its amazing how much louder 141 DB is over my 134.5. I was all about SQ, my 9 was the best score at the show out of all cars, and there were some systems that made mine look like crap. I did about 99% of the work myself, all the points I lost were from a crappy looking install where my amps etc were. But even friends that had systems when they heard mine were blown away. I guess a CRX just has good acoustics.

Dude, I also did all the work myself. I was the only one at the comp's who did their own installs. I did the best I could with what I had and I always got bonus point from the judges when I told them I did my own installs and built my own boxes.

Sooooo much fun in the car audio days. I remember the song No Sunshine by DMX made the saliva vibrate up your throat. Bizarre feeling.

The judging changed from the early days, it use to be about a clean stock looking install. Then they went to giving huge points for really nice work, of course I never built it for show. But my car guy wanted me to try it so I did. Speaker Works/USD audio was where I got my tuning done and bought some of the stuff. Those guys are legends in the industry, you might know their Buick Grand National which was a world championship car.

Well, well, I still have my fun CD. The USAC Bass Spl Shootout disc. I am surprised I still have my hearing.

I was in Newport one night where there use to be some small cruising going on. I was parked in what I considered MY spot. I let someone sit in my car and listen to my system, I was outside just chillen. Cops walked by and gave him a ticket for playing it too loud. Years after the fact every time we saw each other we talked about it.

I got a few tickets in my time. $105 for necessary noise. Funny that he got the ticket.

Subwooers are the next generation in rattle your fillings out of your teeth and make you look and sound like a damn dirtbag when nobody gives a damn about how your system sounds but you and you're just pissing off everybody around you and they hate you not because you have a sweet system but because you're an annoying douche technology!

Is this some sort of riddle where some words don't belong and need to be removed for the message to be read properly?

No you just need to read it correctly. He should have posted it as:

This (minus the terrible spelling and grammar)

Most people get caps because their alternator is not supplying ample power to their system; for example, the lights dim when the bass hits.

OK, so you put a cap to "fix" this problem. Oh look, the lights aren't dimming anymore!

Well yeah, they don't dim, but the alternator is still being overworked, the cap is just there smoothing out the voltage spikes. The alternator still has to work hard, and charge the cap on top of providing power to the entire audio system + the rest of the car. Also, the lights still dim, but it is a constant dim now, so you "feel" like something was fixed.

It's much better to follow the "big 3" or invest in a better alternator. Caps have their place, but for most applications, all they do is mask a problem that should be fixed properly.

No, I'm sorry, you have no clue what you're talking about.
Peak load going above the alternator's ability to satisfy at 14.4VDC != average load above its ability to satisfy at 14.4VDC. You do not need an alternator that can satisfy peak demand to satisfy average.

If you are draining your battery, then you need to step up to a better alternator because you've gone beyond its ability to satisfy the needs of the system. But below that load we're talking about regulating the alternator's output. The alternator cannot give out more peak than it can give out peak, making that the limit of its regulator, so you add in a cap to smooth out the peaks. There is no, "charging the cap on top of providing power to the entire audio system," -- the charging of the cap IS the provision of (some of the) the power to the audio system's high load period because you're only charging what it discharged last cycle. It's a transfer of load from on time to off, not an additional load.

Smoothing out the load masks no problem. If your system has gone beyond your alternator you're gonna drain your battery in the same amount of time either way. If your system has not gone beyond your alternator, then you've fixed the only problem you had.

If you're throwing a 200A alternator into a ricer's Civic because his 300W Blaupunkt amp is dimming his headlights on bass hits, you're doing it wrong.

I remember when the cap trend began when I was on the IASCA circuit and most people were getting them.
I'm glad that didnt last, what a waste of money.
I don't know of any serious competitors that use them, and for good reason.

Class D basically eliminated the need for them in most cars.

I have saw cars first hand with beefed up alternators and yellow tops still dim when sudden, deep bass hits. Any big Fosgate amp would pretty much require 1 or 2 caps. Remember the old ones that got so hot you could cook on them?

Out of the thousands of systems I sold and installed, only maybe 5 really needed a cap. However whenever I put together a serious system I always recommended one. If we were doing a pretty system, I insisted on two.

I always wanted to compete in IASCA, but I didn't have the money for an IASCA worthy system.

I did place 2nd in an IASCA "key" event when the first place winner was invited to compete in the finals at Wasaga Beach regardless of points.
