Did I do something wrong or just my bad luck with SL6RZ

Hi all

Seeing all the good luck you guys are having with the 2.4B SL6RZ I finally can't resist the temptation and went out and picked up one for myself. Unfortunately I was only able to hit 155FSB :brokenheart: which is only like ~2.78Ghz and that's with 1.575V to get it stable. I even got one of those chips that haven't got a voltage written on the surface. Oh well.... Here's my spec.

P4 2.4B SL6RZ
Asus P4PE
512MB Corsair PC3200

The thing is I was able to get my 1.8A B0 stepping up to 2.66Ghz!! Oh well I suppose overclocking depends on luck as well.

Oh and any input would be appreciated too.

Yep.

I went through 4 processors. :) You can try and perhaps play around with the memory settings, and disable turbo in your motherboard bios to make sure your memory/settings aren't holding your oc back.

What is your PCI/AGP set at? I ask because our board has a bug with the lock and if at the default 33.3/66.6 it isn't actually locked so upping it a couple notches will kick it in and allow higher overclocks. BTW, since the lock failure normally doesn't show symptoms till 150fsb when the on-board sound usually stops working and you had the 1.8A@148fsb that would explain why you weren't affected by it. If this issue has been addressed then it's back to the CPU being unspectacular.

Thanks all for the input.

Yes I've tried memory settings and it's well under the spec for the corsair PC3200 that I have so I don't think that's holding me back. Also tried the "optimal" and "auto" setting instead of the "turbo" that it was on.

Thor86: you mean you tried 4 SL6RZ before you had a good one?

DAPUNISHER: Interesting so there's a fault with the P4PE AGP/PCI lock? So what you suggest that I do. Sorry I didn't quite understand your post. So I should up the AGP/PCI to slightly above 66/33 lock then bring it back down again?? The failure is more like unable to boot into windows at anything above a 155FSB.

Also how did you know there's an error with regards to the P4PE's inability to lock the AGP/PCI? Through software? SANDRA? wCPUID?

Thanks

The "cheap" B0 stepping P4's have a limit of 150-160 FSB.
If you get yourself a SL6EF or SL6DV which are C1 stepping then you
can go up to about 180FSB.

Thanks DAPUNISHER for the link. So are you using the 'workaround' method as mentioned in the link? Still haven't finished reading that really long post. Hm... but still I think I've got an underperformer since it won't even start up blank screen altogether no beeps when I set it to 170FSB last night. Still at work now can't wait till I get home and try again.

Ok now I'm at home. Tried the 'workaround' method in an attempt to really lock down "AGP / PCI" but it didn't help at all. I did manage to get it booting up at 3.06 but it wasn't stable prime95 would crash with errors besides I have to give it 1.575v which equates to something like 1.65v under Asus overvolting.

I guess I should give up on this chip now. Put my trusty old 1.8@2.66 back in and hopefully I'll be able to sell this 2.4 to someone.

SL6RZ IS a C1 stepping. It's just that there's no "guarantee" in oc'ing. I think there's a someone here that has a B0 2.4B that he ran @180fsb as well... Just luck of the draw...

MulLa, sorry to hear you're having not so great success... Think of it this way... now you have a legit reason to grab one of those SL6S2 2.53's... ;):D

What are the other markings of your SL6RZ? If it's from Malaysia, and the FPO-BATCH starts with a Q, it's no wonder you got a horrible overclock. The great SL6RZ's are from Costa Rica, with an FPO-BATCH starting with 3, the most famous of which being a 3252xxx-xxxx.

maxSe: Yer good excuse too eh... but have to save up first! Otherwise I'd be living on bread and water for the next month!!!

wixt0r: No actually it's from Costa Rica. Yer I was surprised too the batch is 3306xxxx which should indicate the 6th week of 2003 right? It's so new as well. Oh well just my luck I suppose. :brokenheart:

Anyway thanks again to all that helped and replied to this thread!
