Did I disable the wrong Services?!? Major problem w/ Win2k Pro...

I have Win2k SP2, IIS 5.0 (patched) installed on my system. I was going through a document about tightening down IIS and I was disabling services. Well, ends up that when I rebooted explorer.exe was taking a looooong time to load. There's a long pause after I login as Administrator. So I went back into Services to try to enable some services, but when I right-click and goto Properties nothing happens!! Then, I tried to close the Services window and it tells me I have a properties window open! UGH!

I tried running winnt.exe w/ a boot disk, but my 'Select an OS' menu doesn't come up and YES I have the 'timeout' set. AND the partition that Win2k is on is a NTFS format.

So what now? I can't reinstall Win2k, I've lost alot of abilities (ie. drag and drop, cut and paste, etc) in Windows...so I feel like formatting...any ideas?!?

Win2k tips: Run only the services you need. My case I have (8) gotta have services no more no less on bootup, makes for a speedy machine.
Telephony, Security account manager, RPC (THE most important service otherwise you need a format and reinstall, Remote access connection manager, Protected Storage, Plug and Play, Network Connections, Event Log.

Then what ever software programs.

By doing the above your win2k machine should have dropped from 10 open ports down to 2 ports (TCP:epmap,UDP:microsoft-ds). The last two ports can never be shutdown

Thx for the reply, didn't know if I'd actually get one 🙂

I disabled 2 of the services in your list...

- Both RPC services
- Telephony

Why would I need these? And do I need a reinstall now?
