Yes, im a fscking idiot.. i was puttin the IDe cable into the back of my HD, and low and behold the sucker was upside down! Now, i know what yer thinkin... but i didn't use any extra force when putting it in.. it just slid in as normal... and i saw that it was upsidedown.. so i pull it out and one of the pins is pushed down into the drive.. not bent, but pushed in... so i pull it out and its really loose.. and plug the cable in and pretend that i didnt see anything.. did i fsck my HD? It seems to be working fine.
 
yes, there was the one pin thats normally missing.. and there was a pin that was pushed in.. which i pyshically pulled back out with plyers
 
Which pin did you push in? Not all the pins are used for transfering data. You might wanna check out their technical data sheet to see which pin is that.
 
hrm.. its a 40 gig ibm .... im to afraid to take the cable off right now to check 🙂 but its the one that the normal empty pin spot would hit when upsidedown 🙂 i'll go look for spec sheets i guess.. if i dont find it.. what else are the pins used for?
 
A HD will use only some of IDE's pins. You can check if the pin you pulled is used by the HD, but I recommend you to find someone with a good knowledge on eletronics to put your pin back to place.
 
well the pin is still there... just very lose and a little shorter then before.. if i had to guess.. i'd say that the pin is NOT fully in the connector if at all
 
There probably should be one pin that appears to be missing...it's the one that's opposite the indexing key on the connector. If it's adifferent one and it "pushed in" I would think that it wasn't being used. If it was being used it would have been soldered to the board and therefore probably wouldn't "push in" so easily, It would probably just bend. Have to you tried hooking the thing back up? You're probably OK. If no then just RMA it...😉
