..sorry for your problems..I think I would have left the retail HS in place and simply looked for a way to increase air flow thru the box ie.better intake/exhaust fan. If your syst.air flow is low a new/better cpu heatsink prob.wont help much. When I apply Artic Silver I dab it on wit a tooth pic and spread it wit a razor blade..I never make an Oreo oozeer. Good luck.
 
Starting a computer without the NB HSF is a very bad idea. Northbriges get HOT and they don't have thermal throttling. Smart money's on the motherboard being dead. I'd be willing to bet the RAM's fine tho

Why on earth would you do that?

I fried a duron 1100mhz not too long ago doing this because I was lazy 😛
If you have the HSF latched on without attaching the power connector, your chance of being fried is much less

Hehe you will only know once you have done this and lost a worthless cpu 😀
