does it just need more healing time, oris it some kind of ligament damage

i tried the pinching thing and no sharp pain, but if i try really hard to straighten it i get a sharp pain in the joint. and it would be a pain to find a doctor cause i am so busy during the day and don't have a car

Did it swell up a lot?
I had a rugby ball land pretty much dead on the top of my finger once, chipped the bone a bit, swelled up a lot, hurt a bit, both it was nothing serious.

I did the same thing a few years ago. I tried to catch a pass that was high over my head. The ball hit the tip of one of my fingers and bent it sideways at the joint. It swelled up for weeks - the doctor said I probably chipped the bone at the joint. Now, 3 years later, I still don't have complete range of motion in it.

Lightly pinch it from top to bottom and side to side.

A sharp pain that makes you cringe like a lightening bolt went through it is an indicater of a crack running front to back.

If the bone has been displaced from the joint, it will have to be set and pinned to heal.
Baseball type injury from having a trauma hit to the finger tip.

I've done this twice.

Once I jumped to catch a ball that was over my head, jammed my finger and bent it backwards. Second time I was wrestling with my brother, had my finger sort of pointing straight at the ground, and he fell on my hand, beding one of the joints the wrong way.

I went to the doctor the first time cause it swelled up to 2x its normal size. She just wrapped it up it and said go home. The second time I didn't even bother with the doctor. It just took 2 weeks to get better, and is fine now.

Friend of mine broke the bone tip off the joint knuckle.
Hurt only when he tried to straighten it.

Get a Doctor and an X-Ray - eliminate the doubt. Joint damage can calcify into a mess.

I jammed my thumb playing soccer about 3 weeks ago. I thought I broke mine too, and I was getting pretty worried about it. All of the sudden, yesterday and today it feels great.

I think I might have chipped the bone or something, but it healed itself.

Don't go to the doctor! It's a waste of money and it will heal itself. Unless you can't move it, or the bone is sticking through the skin, it will be fine.
