Did I bork my Asus Transformer?

So.. I picked up a "used" 32gb WiFI Transformer from Amazon about a month ago for $286 on a sale they were running (Actually the tablet was not used, the packaging was just not up to retail standards)

I upgraded it to ICS, rooted it and installed Clockwork Mod v5.5.0.4 . It worked great until...

The other day I turned it on and saw an upgrade being pushed . Without thinking about it I accepted the upgrade. When it rebooted it went right to the Clockwork Recovery Console. And there it sits - I can maneuver around the console, but it will not read an SD card and I can't figure out a way to copy a file to the unit...

Am I missing something here or is the tablet borked?

Not 100% sure on this, but are you able to take the Sd card out and see if the computer can read it? Might need one of the recovery files for the Transformer, see RootzWiki or XDA, do a data/wipe, and reflash from that.

Can you at least mount USB storage? If you can, then you can start from fresh.

No, but I am able to connect with ADB and can even push smaller files to the tablet, but I get a "protocol error" when I try to push a ROM over.

Yes, the computer reads the SD card fine, but CWM won't read it an SD card in recovery mode. I don't really understand it, but CWM reads a "/sdcard" directory on the tablet, but apparently it's actually the file structure of the unit. That's not confusing... not at all...

It looks like I am not the only person with this issue after attempting to do the OTA update that Asus pushed last week.

Every freaking step of this process has been a goat-rope - nothing is simple. Example - to install the drivers to ADB would work I had to manually install them from the same place I did when I did my Gnex listed under "samsung device" makes perfect sense to me.

I'm about ready to throw this thing in the pool.

You did root it and install CWR.

Yes, and apparently the version that I installed is what caused the problems I was having reading the SD card, etc....

So found this thread that has you flash another version of CWR which let me read the SD card and flash the ICS ROM back to the tablet avoiding the ADB protocol errors

What a CF

THANKS for help everyone

is this tablet even worth rooting? ics runs so well on it out of the box... well ok it ships with the old android but the first thing it does upon first use is install ics automatically... and its just a really nice os as it is

im worried because of the potential problems as exampled here. these tablets have enough hardware problems that i really dont want any more headaches (my transformer doesnt power on from cold boot unless the charger is plugged in. but it wakes from sleep just fine so whatever)

The only reason I rooted it right out of the chute was so I could use the widget in the app drawer feature of Nova Launcher... I've found a few other gizmos that won't go unless rooted, but at the end of the day you're probably right....

i guess it depends on what you use it for. this tf101 i have i think there is no doubt it will be delegated to a coffee table media hub for general use when people come over... and a remote control for my htpc. so it has zero need to be rooted.

but i think i might get a prime with the keyboard dock to replace my laptop. i mean i use a netbook full time as it is now, and the prime is faster then my netbook especially with the video. the only thing that worries me is no windows, but rooting it should make anything i might want possible.

if you arent into it, then you dont have to

every device is worth hacking.

does this statement actually mean anything?

I don't speak fluent T_Yamamoto but I kinda took it as the following:

If you don't have a specific need to root a device then it's not a requirement. If the out of box experiece works for you then all is good.

Rooting/hacking a device allow you to do things that aren't possible otherwise.

haha, well you are correct in a sense.
what i meant was, if you arent comfortable with the fact that you are voiding your warranty and/or not wanting to have to deal with problems that may come with rooting, then you dont have to.
BUT rooting does allow you to do certain things that manufacturers and/or Google blocks.

I believe that every device that has the capability to be rooted, should be rooted; alot like CPU and overclocking, its free and anyone can do it (with time and effort)

Had/have the same issue. Hold volume down then hold power. Keep them depressed simultaneously until the screen comes on. You should come to a menu where you can boot Android by pressing volume up or press volume down to select recovery.

I wish it was that simple to fix. As I looked into the issue it was a known problem caused by the update putting the tablet into an immediate boot loop. Not a huge deal, just flash and go, right? The problem was further exasperated by the version of CWR not being able to read off the SD card.

Guess I got lucky then. The first time it was booted it threw an error about not able to find a file on the sd card. Do you have a recovery image you can restore to?

No, but once I got a version of CWR that could read the SD card it was pretty easy to flash the ROM
