Report: George Zimmerman sues Elizabeth Warren, Pete Buttigieg over tweets

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. - George Zimmerman is accusing two of the leading Democratic presidential contenders of defamation.

Zimmerman, who was acquitted in the killing of teenager Trayvon Martin in Sanford, reportedly filed a lawsuit in Florida this week against Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the Washington Times reports.

According to the Washington Times, the lawsuit accuses the two of “maliciously defam[ing]” Mr. Zimmerman, using the killing “as a pretext to demagogue and falsely brand Zimmerman as a white supremacist and racist to their millions of Twitter followers.”

The lawsuit reportedly seeks $265,000,000, the Washington Times reports.

The tweet the lawsuit if referring to is reportedly one made on February 5 on what would have been Trayvon Martin's 25th birthday.

"My heart goes out to [Martin's mother] @SybrinaFulton and Trayvon's family and friends. He should still be with us today," Warren tweeted to her 3.7 million followers. "We need to end gun violence and racism. And we need to build a world where all of our children-especially young Black boys-can grow up safe and free."

Buttigieg also reportedly added on Twitter, "Trayvon Martin would have been 25 today. How many 25th birthdays have been stolen from us by white supremacy, gun violence, prejudice, and fear?"

The Washington Times reports that the lawsuit accuses Ms. Warren and Mr. Buttigieg of actual malice, "a prerequisite to win a libel case if one is a public figure."

“Both defendants, Buttigieg and Warren, are alleged in the complaint to have acted with actual malice, as it is widely known that Zimmerman was acquitted of murder based on self-defense,” the announcement said, according to the Washington Times.

Zimmerman's attorney, Larry Klayman claims the tweets were made to bolster both candidates' standings with African American voters. “They used George Zimmerman as a whipping boy to try to whip up votes in the African American community," Klayman said.

The suit was reportedly filed in Polk County, Florida.

Zimmerman was acquitted in 2012 of shooting and killing the 17-year-old Martin.

In December 2019, Zimmerman's attorney announced that his client is suing Martin's family, prosecutors and others for $100 million.

Attorneys not associated with the case tell Fox 35 News the case may be difficult to prove. “There is no mention of Mr. Zimmerman in the tweets themselves, and there are no facts that are stated in the tweets. Defamation claims require a false statement of fact about somebody,” said First Amendment attorney Larry Walters. “So if you imply enough in the tweet to suggest this is clearly about Mr. Zimmerman, then perhaps there would be a claim there. And that may be ultimately something for a judge or a jury to decide in this case.”

Once again. Posts require personal commentary.

well he's probably doing this because he can't get or hold a job, he's been a pretty shitty person, if you can call him that, since he was acquitted.

he wants some else to blame for his own screw-ups.

He was obviously a pretty shitty person before he was acquitted as well.

For purpose of debate-

What did those being sued say? If it could be seen as an attack on some acquitted and the result could arguably be linked to harm or malice for political or personal gain then Zimmerman MAY have a case.

That said it's going to be hard to prove and any award will be reduced to a fraction of what is sought.

Zimmerman has limited financial resources unlike a Trump or Bloomberg so his case will fold regardless of merits anyway.

The tweets are quoted in the OP and neither direct any malice towards Zimmerman. He's not even named. Completely frivolous, but no doubt he and his lawyer will grift more than is needed to pay for the litigation.

Thank you.

Zimmerman will be dismissed.

Remember, neither Democrat mentioned Zimmerman by name or even referred to his actions in these tweets. Only mentioned Trayvon Martin.

To be fair simply mentioning Trayvon’s name is very triggering to folks of a certain political persuasion.

lol @ $265 million. ....so, that's his "fair value" if all these horrible things by mean people didn't keep happening to him, preventing him from realizing his true value?

what a fucking waste of carbon atoms.

Probably looking for a publisher for his "If I did it" book.

Did what? Trayvon made the choice to turn around, head back towards, and attack someone with a gun.

There is no comparison to OJ. We know the bloody fight ended when Zimmerman killed Trayvon. There is no question or doubt as to the actors involved. The contest is over the legality of defending yourself, and questions of if that is actually what occurred. The court case presented enough evidence to suggest the defendant needed to defend himself from a violent attacker. Case closed.

The only evidence of guilt Zimmerman could theoretically provide is to answer how the physical conflict started.

Yawn. I'm sure you'd still believe that same BS narrative if an armed black guy had stalked a teenage white girl through her neighbothood to her front door, right?
The only reason Zimmerman got away with it is because he murdered the witness, who was standing his own ground in front of his own house. And the same people who normally champion Castle Doctrine and Stand Your Ground didn't give a fuck because they don't believe "thugs" (as they call black men) have those rights. Period.

Oh, and let's not forget the media's typical role in this kind of event, by falsely portraying Zimmerman as some kind of law enforcement authority figure ("neighborhood watch captain") when he was nothing of the sort, and by libeling the black victim by sprinkling as much as dope on him as they could find.

Zimmer may have gotten acquitted but he sure acts like he's guilty of all charges brought against him.

As I like to say: Zimmerman has spent the last several years trying to show that he should've been convicted. He's mean, violent and fragile, one of those fundamentally broken people who should be kept out of society until he can reform... and honestly, I'm not sure that's possible at this point.
