I have now done the OCCT CPU test (1 hour, no problems) and memtest86 (2 passes, also no problems). I also took off the top cover and cleaned out the dust on the heatsink and fan and checked that things seemed in order. It seemed to fit flush with the card, but I didn't remove the heatsink, so there might still be a problem with the thermal paste or a contact issue in a hard to see place.

amenx: Thanks for the tip. I switched to the 314.22 driver, and managed to run EVE Online long enough to switch skills, and then some. FC3 still crashed after one minute though.

So it looks like "Far Cry 3 killed my GTX 570". Current plan of action: Contact the seller and try to get a new card on the warranty. Also look for a new PSU probably.

The PSU has not been ruled out, so until that is replaced, you won't know of your GPU is dead or not.
