I am hearing repeated complaints of either 1) Black Display issues, or 2) Incorrect core/mem speeds. I know there is already a BIOS flash to fix #2.

Anyone else experiencing #1?

Yes I had to do the bios flash. Fixed it now runs stock at 500/1500

i should be getting my eVGA 7900gt CO SC's in a few days. i dunno but it seems like anytime i've had problems switching video cards ,it was a registry deal. i've used driver cleaner and such and it didn't help.
since i have everyting backed up on an external hd, i've just got into the habit of reformatting and doing a clean install when upgrading video cards. i know it sounds like a pita, but it cures a lot of woes. jmho ;)

Evga had trouble with the 7800 series when they overclocked the geometry clock too high. Did they mess up clock speeds again with the 7900gt?

Okay, I am reading more complaints about the 7900GTs: 1) Fans are loud and don't throttle down, 2) People are experiencing artifacting in games.

I wonder if sending my 7800GT to eVGA yesterday was the right idea.

Lol, I ordered two XFX 7900 GT's and ended up getting 7900 GT Xtreme's.
The box said it was the standard ones, but the bios and card speeds said otherwise.

But you dont hear me complaining :p

EDIT: and yes in some games I do experience artifacting, but rarely and so far only on COD2 and Oblivion.
I've discovered its due to the lack of memory cooling.
If I underclock the memory to 1440 from 1500, it irradicates all artifacts.
Leaving my clock speed at 550/560mhz is fine though.

But I'm ordering two Zalman VF900's to sort these issues.

I must say, Nvidia really messed up and cheaped out on the coolers for these things.
They should have had MUCH better cooling solutions.
A high end GPU with a low end GPU cooler.

It's just not on.

I also had a problem with the blank screen. I inially had my EVGA 7900GT Superclock hooked up to my PSU using the 6pin PCIe connector directly from my PSU. It didn't work, I had a blank screen, my computer booted up find and I could hear the hard drive working. No picture on the screen. I then used the included 4pin Y adapter that came with the card and hooked it up. It worked fine. I haven't had any other issues since. I would rather use the 6pin PCIe adapter since my PSU has the wire and it would cause less clutter in my case, but it works fine for now so I haven't messed with it....

my 7900gt SC is working picture perfect. only issues are with oblivion, but i think we know who's at fault there. everything else, CS:S, BF2, NFS:MW, COD2, FEAR run perfectly. Even oblivion runs great except for crashing on exit, and a couple of occasional crashes to desktop.

Hmm I too got the XFX Extreme version
I have had no issues at all yet...
stock clocks and no artifacts at all.
I didnt even notice that the memory was not under the HSF anymore...
maybe better look at that..

My only problem with the eVGA 7900GT (500/1500) was the loud small annoying fan on it... I replaced the stock HSF with a spare Zalman VF700-Cu I had lying around... and it makes a big difference! Before it was doing 50C idle and around 65C load now with the VF700-Cu it's doing 35C idle and 45C load while being quieter! Plus now it has memory heatsinks, which would likely help.

I've never had a modern graphics card be this cool... in fact it runs cooler than my 130nm Athlon 4000+... surprising for a graphics card! :)

I have two 7900GT SC's without any problems yet. I purchased them on the first day and got the initial batch as well. I too will definitely be replacing the stock HSF tho, its way too loud.

Sounds like the problems are resolved.

As I've sat at #6 in the Step-Up cue for a week, I've pondered what will happen first: I get my hands on a Zalman VF900, or I get my new 7900GT SC.

I got Oblivion and 2GB of OCZ PC4000 XTC on the way! :D

FYI on the Zalman VF900: It's fan has a three pin connector that plugs in to the Fanmate 2 device (used to control voltage/speed), or to a MOBO fan header. If you got a MOBO that supports fan voltage adjustments, you got a clean installation, BIOS adjustable GPU fan, and no need for the Fanmate 2 device. Very cool...

Yeah. the stock heatsink is pretty loud.....
I will be replacing it next month when the new Zalman comes out.
Not sure what is causing the black screen for me when I use the 6pin PCIe connector from the PSU. When I swap out the HSF, I will try the 6pin PCIe wire again to see if it works.....

Please repeat after me:

GPU Vendor: nVidia (responsible for the CHIP and drivers)

PCBA Vendor: EVGA/XFX/etc. (responsible for all the interconnects to chip to the mobo - pcba, mem, cooling, etc.)

You/Owner: $$$ (responsible for Drivers / Power supply / etc. installation)

For me, no issues with my Asus, now volt moded to 650/800 clocks (no artifacting or otherwise).

How did you volt mod the 7900GT? (could you post a link to a "how to" or something like that? was it on XS?)

Thanks.

the 7800gt I didnt want to chance it and decided to go ati this round and havent had any problems. I cant believe there still having issues.

I'm very suprised that some of these VC manufacturers are applying out of the box OCs!!! Some as high as 100 Mhz over stock speeds also the memory is OC'd. WTF!!! They OC it with out upgrading the cooling and none added for the memory...that is pathetic.. I truly believe that is the problem. Did they run their specs while sitting in a freezer?? Get rid of that stock cooling!! LOL Sorry fellas when I see a VC manufacturer OC with no memory heat sinks...i scratch my head..total bs:)
