did clarkson really say he'd rather have the mondeo?

and i understand why, after bungling the first attempt to bring over the mondeo (contour), ford would be reluctant to bring over more. but the mondeo has been a good sized car for a while now (the contour was far too small), and way better than the taurus.

could have kept the taurus for fleet and mondeo to sell to regular people.

I was always confused by the Mondeo. Is it sold in the US under a different name? I mean, it lapped the track ahead of the base BMW's and Mercs a while ago.

So its a contour? it doesn't look like one . . . or did it start as a contour and grow into mid-sized status?

speaking of which, why doesn't betacars have it up yet?

Hey, I love my Contour. Of course I have a SVT Contour but I still enjoy it. It has a big trunk and while back seat is not roomy for adults it's fine on shorter trips and my daughter fits great back there. Contour was a Car&Driver ten best winner in '95 & '96, Wards top ten engine in 1998 for the SVT Contour engine. 2.5L V6 = 200HP

The Jaguar X-Type is also built o nthe 2nd gen Mondeo platform.

Added a pic of my car Hawtness!

Good question, I'm not sure what it's called over in the US, but I drove one for a month (while my company car was being replaced), and I loved it.

My father then went and bought one, and so did my brother.

They may be "common" cars, but they're very good at what they do.

the mondeo first gen was released as the contour here. the car had basically no back seat, so was a sales failure, even though everything else about it was better than a taurus. so ford decided, after botching that one, not to bring the current one over (a pity, since the current one seems a good bit bigger than the old one, and a lot better than a taurus). i suspect that as the mazda6 is similarly sized and is providing the underpinnings of the ford fusion (not the same as the fiesta-based european fusion), that the mondeo will never again see these shores under the ford badge. but, the modeo is the basis of the jaguar x-type.

No back seat?
That's weird. The only recent Ford saloon (over here at least) that I can remember was the Cougar - more of a "sports saloon" than anything else.
