Did Chez Guevera really do anything ?

I was told by a very credible person that Guevera didn't really do anything, nothing amazing anyway, and the only reason he is so damn famous is because of how he died.

I'm also wondering why he is so marketable. I see this character's face on tshirts and stickers, why ?

Can you explain that any further, or should I just google it.

Well that clears that up.

So he was a brave guerilla fighter - I still don't see how he became so marketable. I'm sure he did some pretty horrible things, like using children to fight, and keeping in mind it was guerilla warefare. Even that website reads like a brainwashed worshipping of him. Like they filled in the facts with glorious tales when they came up short. I'm a bit skeptical.

Pages two and three of that article talk about that very issue: why he's been commodified over time, moreso than other rebels or ideologue. I don't completely agree with the author's conclusions, but it makes for an interesting read at least.

Ok yeah I was half way through when I posted that. I don't really agree with what he's saying either. I think that really every kid with a guevera shirt, for the most part, doesn't have any idea of what it means, like the author does say to a certain point. I think that target consumerism, like a che shirt, is made not to be thought of, he's already famous and reckognizable so let's utilize him and apply him to a sub culture which is as dimwitted as they come.

Meh. Thanks!

True. And those who do have any idea only focus on the fact that he was a "rebel for the poor." They totally ignore the outcome of all his efforts: Murder and decades of totalitarian oppression.

Idiots.

Pretty much, but thats the trouble with most symbols in our society. People wear them because they think its "cool". Unfortunately that includes a lot of other things that people are willing to be part of, but not willing to take the time to understand (i.e. religion... incredible if you try to understand it, dangerous if you don't).

I agree completely.

Taking the same narrow-minded approach, that he was a "revolutionary for the poor", you could also take an image of any person, poster paint the face into 2 shades, boil down their values to a single ideal which is vastly over-generalized and then iconify them.

A 2-tone image of Hitler could be accompanied by "Patriot" on some moron's tshirt.
