Just returned from Costa Rica and this was the first time we flew over Cuba on a US based airline (Spirit Air). I know Spirit was fined $100,000 last year for paying Cuba to fly over their airspace, but was wondering if anything changed with the recent policy changes towards Cuba.

Everytime i've flown American, we fly around Cuba, while Taca (a Costa Rican airline) flys right over.

Any idea?

I have told my anti-air teams to STAND DOWN. They are no longer authorized to fire SAMs at foreign aircraft from the Cuban mainland. I have done this because I am noble and merciful. But, US, you are on a probationary period. If you do not bend to my will, I will have my Cuban forces once again strike fear!

I flew over Cuba in 1990 going to Jamaica, We went right down the middle, in broad daylight, in a regular US based airliner. I've never looked it up, but I assume both the US and Cuba are signatories to long standing international treaties establishing air lanes.

BTW, the areas of Cuba I saw didn't look anything like I expected. It reminded me of mid-1960s farmland Ohio where I used to stay with my mother's family.
