Did anyone else HATE the vehicle sequences in HL2

I know I'm a little late to the party when it comes to Half Life 2. I'm only playing through the single player game now for the first time, as I waited until I had a Video Card that could playi the game in all its glory.

Well, I've been enjoying it a lot, for the most part, except for one thing: the horrendous vehicle sequences, specially the car in Highway 17.

The game is not very clear as to where you should be heading, but the mechanics of the car and how it handles don't allow much exploration. When you are 'on the right track', at a high speed, it's not that bad, but if you get side tracked just a bit and get flipped over...It just feels so clunky, and floaty. And those stupid Antlions! Grrrrrr....I feel like punching Gabe Newell in the nuts :frown:!

Well, it was kind of neat that it followed the same physics model as everything else...
But yeah, it sucked. Not as much as Halflife 1's vehicles (which were mostly in mods, unless you count the railcar, which sucked too), but it sucked.

I thought the vehicles were enjoyable for the most part, BUT... the massive amount of spawning ant-lions was absolutely ridiculous and very annoying when you did flip your car over.

Umm, no.
I actually thought they were enjoyable and a nice break from the run and gun. The game as a whole had just enough variety to keep me interested.

I liked them because they were not super-uber-hyper accurate simulators like Need For Speed and all that other BS. They were fun little sequences similar to the SnowSpeeder levels of Super Empire Strikes Back and that silly little Dash Rendar game for the N64.

I thought the vehicles were a nice touch to the game. It allowed Gordon to travel alot of ground, and get the feeling that you were actually travelling to some distant destinations.. instead of just some cutscene or something.

I'm with shorty on that. It was a good diversion from the running around. I liked making the airboat do all sorts of neat jumps - flipped it twice over the dam! That was fun. The buggy was kind of annoying but if it handled well that sequence would have been over before it started. I like the desolate area that you had to traverse while speeding around on the buggy. Ramming combine troops and sending them flying into the air was satisfying.

I wouldn't say that I hated them, but I could have done without them.

Wasn't fond of the airboat, particularly as you hit the LOADING message a lot. The timing of those intermissions sucked, especially when it interrupted the big jump down to the river below. That should be a cool action moment but you get the fvcking LOADING message again, WTF?! :| Whoever set that bit up needs a beating.

I did enjoy driving from location to location in the buggy and having a go at the Combine though.

I really liked the vehicles and had a lot of fun with them, especially with the airboat. I kept trying to get it to do different things.

I generally don't like it when games make obvious attempts to vary the gameplay because it just feels contrived. HL2 seemed to do this a lot, but the game was fun enough that I didn't mind too much. If I saw an open gun turret, that meant that Combine troopers were going to be charging at me soon. If I saw a vehicle, that meant the level would be absolutely HUGE with tons of ramps and obstacles designed for vehicles.

If they're going to bother with vehicles, they should be BattleMechs, or else don't bother!

The vehicle sequences were a bit tiresome, yeah.

super-uber-hyper accurate and simulators should never be accompanied in the same sentence with need for speed lol

I agree they were kinda annoying. Actually I personally think HL2 is a little overrated in general - it's certainly nothing like the leap that HL1 was in its day.

it was too long. ilost interest soon after. basically any game that has driving levels turns to sh*t... quake 4 had that silly tank. i bought the game to play a fps not a cheesy arcade game. atleast give the option to skip.

Pretty much my oppinion.
And yeah, some of the loading screen timings of the speedboat really made the whole deal suck, some places were amazing, but the whole race was ruined by the oh so annoying loading screens in some places.

And Highway 17...I don't know, it didn't do it for me, just a long boring transport.

I liked the airboat A LOT... good memories from that segment. The cart wasn't as fun though.

The vehicle scenes take FOREVER! Cheap fillers.

Either you really like HL2 or you think it's ok. Which one can depend on if you like Doom3 or not. If you liked Doom3, you'll think HL2 is a good game, but with it's obvious flaws. If you didn't like Doom3, then you'll think HL2 is the god of all games.

I'm actually loving the game. It has a lot of flair, if I may put it that way. I love the way it looks, the way it feels. I love the graphics, even if the lighting does look kinda crappy compared to newer games. It's a breath of fresh air in a sea of generic sci-fi shooters.

The problem is just with the vehicle levels. For instance, now I'm stuck in Highway 17. I just finished the part where you have to shoot the Combine aircraft with the rocket launcher. That was INSANELY fun. And then I'm back to the car, and the difference is astonishing; it's like playing two different games...one that sucks, and one that doesn't.

Hey I liked the tanks in Q4. The outdoor levels were absolute CRAP, but the tank itself was very responsive.

I didn't mind the vehicles in HL2 much, but I will admit, that while not as bad as Q4, the levels themselves hurt the vehicles. Constant loading screens were the problem of the day with HL2. The weapon on the buggy in HL2 wasn't exactly a weapon of choice for a vehicle either, it left you wanting to stop the vehicle to aim.

Had they sat down and made more arcadey levels for the vehicles that loaded all at once, I think they would have been much more fun.

Lol, I remember trying to ditch the airboat. You come to one part where you have to drop a fridge or something, and I didn't realize it, so I stacked up boxes or something and tried to jump over the barrier. Unfortunately, there was an invisible wall.

Oh, and halflife 1 had similar loading points during cool action moments. They seem to think it's dramatic enough to warrant a load point.
