Did anyone else go see Howard Stern in Union Square?

i didn't hear about this until around 11am. i got there around 1140am and it was pretty crowded. howard showed up at noon and started handing out sirius radios and free 1 year subscriptions to all the people who showed up early enough.

i was in the late group in the back and was only able to get a certificate good for a free sirius radio with the purchase of a 1 year subscription.

does anybody really care about howard stern?

yes

I care a lot, and I definitely would have gone if I were in NYC. I'll definitely be buying Sirius sometime next year (I figure they'll make some strides in the equipment between now and Jan 06).

I agree, their equipment doesn't excite me quite yet.

the catch with the certificate(which just has a generic code that i'm sure will be available all over the intarweb in a few hours), is that you have to buy the 1 year subscription by 24 nov 2004 to get the free radio. and howard doesn't start on sirius until jan 2006, pretty much guaranteeing that any howard fan who wants the free radio will have to buy 2 years of subscription.

it's not that big of a deal if you were planning on buying into sirius anyway.

I thought this would be the case as soon as I heard about the "deal". Still not a bad deal I guess, but since the radios have been available for as little as $49 recently, it ain't setting the world on fire. My guess is that the Stern contract will create a huge boost in Sirius membership over the next year or so, and, like XM, the technology will improve. I figure there's at least some chance I might buy a new, Sirius-equipped car in the next year, and I'll presumably always have broadband at work and home, so there may never be a need to buy an actual radio anyway.
