I have call bell south about there New DSL in Abbeville, LA and they won't tell me if i can Connect the DSL modem to a hub and share it to 2 computers. I want to know if anyone had done that before. If you could, how did you change the USB connectors to a CAT5 connectors.

I am getting the Bell South DSL and giving up on crappy service of @Home. Officially Bell South won't support networking, but you can easily do it. Getting a DSL Router is an easy way. I recommend the SMC Barricade 7004BR (4 port) with a built in Print Server, check Outpost.com for under $100. Their built in software makes you invisible to the outside world. Depending on your OS you can also do a 2 NIC combo, or configure your existing hub. For great info check practicallynetworked.com.

Ok guys, you need to wait a minute here.... Buying a router WILL NOT LET YOU SHARE BELLSOUTH CONNECTION WITH YOUR SETUP!!! Yes that is right. Here is what you need to do in order to share it with your lan. Bellsouth will give you a USB or PCI modem.. Neither one of these will allow you to hook up to a router.. Now, there are three different routes you can go. My person would be to go on egay and buy a Cayman 3220H. This is a DSL modem/router/hardware firewall.. It does all three of thosee and WORKS with bellsouth dsl... I had one until about a month ago. They are great. They run for about 200-250 on egay. YOu can also get the alcatel home modem... It is just a modem, not a router. This runs on egay for around 200-260. Now, your third option is to get the alcatel 100.. This is the older model of dsl modem but the cheapest. You can get one on egay for less than 50 bucks.

I have owned all of these modem and my personal reccomentdation is to spend the extra buck and get the cayman 3220H.. It will save you a lot of hassle and bellsouth has specific instructions on setting it up on their ftp servers. Not to mention the face it has all three peices of hardware built into one.. DSL Modem/Router/Hardware Firewall.

Only way to use a router is to keep calling Bellsouth and bitch at them until the customer representative puts a note down for a ethernet-based external modem. I had to pay for installation by a "professional" ...who did bring an external modem since its ultimately up to the installer according to the customer representative I spoke with. The guy knew why I wanted that and he said he'd have done the same. I am using a Netgear RT314 and its working great sharing my Bellsouth DSL connection between two computers.

You could always just use ICS in windows or if you run linux just set a simple ip masqin scheme. How many ips do they give you??
